ZF systems for Indian FTR 1200
ZF conquers new motorcycle brands and markets with sophisticated chassis technology

The brand new sports model Indian FTR 1200 S has a mechanically adjustable telescopic fork from ZF. ZF is currently supplying the chassis equipment for 170 different models from ten motorcycle brands.

ZF has been at home in motorcycle technology for 16 years. Ten different two-wheeler brands are currently using ZF chassis components in series production, three of them with semi-active chassis. This means that ZF is the standard supplier for a total of 170 different models from well-known manufacturers. ZF booked the new addition as a new addition Indian FTR 1200 S, which will be delivered in Europe from summer 2019.

ZF has been on the market with adjustable and semi-active chassis components for motorcycles since 2013. Since then, this technology has been used by the German chassis experts with production in Candiolo near Turin, Italy, to provide 170 high-quality motorcycle models with a little more active safety thanks to particularly advanced methods of chassis tuning.

With the perfect setting over bumps

The Indian brand from Iowa in the USA has historic roots in motorsport. And the brand is happy to pick up on its racing talents again today. The latest model from the year 2019 has the model name FTR 1200 S, whereby the model name was created with reference to the successes in so-called “flat track racing”. This is a racing formula in the United States in which races are carried out in clubsport format on rolled or oiled sand slopes. By the way: In reality, the racetracks are by no means as level and undemanding as the name suggests. Indian was able to enter the flat-track championship repeatedly in 2017 and 2018. In keeping with the success on the oval, the new Indian FTR 1200 sports model is now coming onto the market, the S version of which has standard equipment with an adjustable telescopic fork from ZF. In this version, both fork legs have an adjustment for the spring base. In addition, the rebound stage of the fork damping can be adjusted in 20 stages on the left bar, the compression stage on the right bar.

The fully variable fork adjustment of the Indian FTR 1200S allows separate adjustment options for rebound and compression, as well as access to the spring base.

With this, Indian has opted for equipment specifically for the new 123 PS (88kW) V2 twin that can certainly meet high demands. The new model has, among other things, a fork with a comparatively generous stanchion diameter of 43 millimeters and 150 millimeters of travel. These data ensure outstanding stability and guarantee the best handling both in touring and sporty driving.

The ZF fork has a damper adjustment with 20 levels, whereby the damping of the fork can be adapted separately for rebound and compression to the desired driving style. The mechanical intervention on the spring base also allows a careful influence on the chassis geometry. The expert knows: This improves the stability over a wide range of possible uses. The golden anodized ZF telescopic fork The FTR 1200 S can be adjusted and used from comfortable to sporty. Differences in the weight of the driver and front passenger can also be successfully neutralized with the right setting.

The design of the ZF telescopic fork offers very good responsiveness due to low friction. The fork responds particularly sensitively and reacts sensitively to the manipulated variables for the chassis setting. This helps to achieve more comfort, security and agility.

The very sturdy ZF fork unfolds its specific advantages and thus ensures a particularly safe journey. Markus Seitz, head of development for motorcycle dampers at ZF: “When designing and coordinating the fork, we paid particular attention to good mechanical stability and low friction. In this way, the ZF fork enables sensitive responsiveness both on small bumps and when cornering on an uneven road surface. The driver always receives defined feedback from the chassis and feels safe on the road under all circumstances “.

In addition to adjustable forks, ZF also supplies conventional, adjustable dampers for the new Indian FTR 1200. Comparable ZF systems are also available for other motorcycles. In addition, ZF offers particularly smooth adaptation to the prevailing road surface conditions with its semi-active chassis with so-called CDC technology (Continuous Damping Control, damping rate adjustment while driving). This electronically controlled suspension adjustment works on a semi-active basis, also in combination for both axles.

The various ZF systems are very popular with motorcyclists of all brands. Although the ZF system is often available as an equipment option for a surcharge, a number of the best-selling models in the German market have a take rate of more than 90 percent.
