Was it good or bad that Tobi was allowed to watch the professional first? Let’s put it this way: the respect for doing a backflip yourself didn’t exactly diminish.

Now just keep turning, because that way a landing would be less than ideal.

And now? Did the landing succeed? Where is Tobi? It landed safely in the foam. And went down.

Backflip without great workout
Self-experiment backflip from the PS editor

Is it possible for a motocross newbie to get a clean backflip without extensive training? PS editor Tobi started the self-experiment.

“I have to do this story!”, I tried to get my fellow ministers excited about “Operation Backflip”. The reactions ranged from “he is crazy” to “just let him talk” to “stop, but don’t break anything. Would be stupid right now because of your workforce ” In my opinion, the likelihood that I would actually break something during the action was vanishingly small. For one thing, I didn’t want to land the jump on dirt, but into a foam pit. So a soft foam pit. On the other hand, I had never broken anything before. Not even in my worst crash so far, a bad highsider in the Dreifachlinks von Oschersleben. Tobi got up again, but the ZX-10R was behind it.

Still imagined me Kawasaki Germany spontaneously provided a KX 85 for the backflip number. Karsten from the sports department did not look as if he would give the kid with the smart-ass glasses on his face (there are contact lenses for motorcycling) to even halfway through the action. But there are just cool people who work at Kawa, and I got the moped. Thanks again for that!
Wanted a foam pit and a backflip instructor
The search for a foam pit with a backflip instructor turned out to be much more difficult beforehand. Fortunately, our off-road photographer Markus Jahn maintains good relationships in this area. “Call Kai Haase, he’s just as young a guy as you and he has his own pit of scraps. The only one in Germany! “, Markus told me. Kai has been in business as a professional freestyler since 2013. He drives shows, contests and can do all that. He thought my idea was as unusual as it was good, and we set an appointment. Within two days, the maestro would provide me with the foam pit including his expertise on his training site near Potsdam. bingo!
During the long drive from Stuttgart to Berlin I didn’t think about anything and let the radio blare loudly. I would make the jump at least once. For the camera. Then there would definitely be something in the box to work with in the editorial office.
You have to get a feel for the bike!
Once on the premises, it was raining softly. Kai and his girlfriend Sofia were in the process of preparing the route and setting up the ramps. For the action we had to rent an excavator that would fish me and the bike out of the foam pit with the help of a rope. “It’s best to get used to the moped and drive a few laps. You have to get a feel for the thing! ”Said Kai. On the other side of the hill there was a kind of “oval”, in which I didn’t sink into the mud with the compact 85 and we could make friends a little. For me it was only the fifth time ever on a motocross bike and the first on a two-stroke. The light KX has 24 HP and goes like hell in the upper speed range. And should 12-year-old children race with it? Holly cow!
The now heavily dug up “oval” was actually the paddock. Groundsman Gunther is thankfully not the kind of resentful person and quickly forgave me considering the “Operation Backflip”. In the meantime the freestyle ramps were in place. All preparations were made.
Then the time came. “We are only now practicing a normal jump into the foam pit over the smaller earth ramp here,” ordered Kai. Said and done. That was pretty good, wasn’t it? “Oh well. Once again! And if that works, then take the big ramp! ”The approach to the ramp and the jump itself determine whether the trick is successful. It is important to head for the kicker calmly and in a straight line, at least that’s what ski jumps were called when I was a skater. The gas must be held in such a way that the motorcycle is in the optimal speed range in order to fire off with full power the next time you turn your wrist. “You won’t get around without the accelerating power from the rear wheel. So you have to go all the way in the ramp! “, Kai explained. Sounds easy, but it is not. The jump rises almost four meters into the air in front of your front wheel and has an almost vertical slope in the last third, almost like a wall. I jumped twice, four times, twelve times. In the ramp, the motorcycle is pressed violently into the springs by the compression, which supports the effect of catapulting out and over time noticeably affects the leg muscles. The constant jumping in brought no further improvement at this point, because on average every two clean jumps was followed by a messed up.
It went terribly wrong
So I decided to just try the flip now. Kai gave final instructions: “Concentrate! Think about the clean approach. Accelerate in the ramp as soon as the front wheel leaves the ramp, lean back and continue to give full throttle. And no matter what happens, don’t jump off the bike! “
It went terribly wrong. I made the mistake of keeping one finger on the clutch and one on the brake. Immediately it knocked the moped out of my hand immediately after I tried to turn backwards. Holding on like this is not possible, no chance. Second try.
There are only two options in front of the ramp: do it or let it stay. You can’t afford to be unsure because the ramp will smell it, spit you away in some direction and throw the moped in your neck. Recalibrate the brain. Start up. Gas. Turn, turn, turn. And cheers! It’s worked out!
Fully attached to motocross
Because once is not a single one, of course I had to try again right away. It takes a while to get a feel for the necessary speed of rotation. Incidentally, professional freestylers often jump their tricks on dirt the first time, without any foam pit. But professional freestylers also have tattoos and everything. I only have my smart-ass glasses and I usually like to wear shirts in the editorial office. In terms of motocross, I’m totally hooked – maybe I’ll go to the tattoo artist around the corner soon.
