At EICMA 2016, Benelli presented a host of models, some of which are expected to enter the market quickly; others are expected to mature. The 502 C is one of them. Not long ago, it was discovered as a 402 S. If the style has not changed at all when it becomes 502 C, the engine has gained space.. A maousse? Not really. Now that Benelli no longer has a big engine in his organ bank, both in displacement and character, everything would suggest that the lion of Pesaro has settled down. In watts, of course. But driven by the expression of Chinese investors, this machine is trying to bluff, betting everything on form rather than hitting bottom. The 502 C is Benelli’s first roadster-cruiser, with a hot-rod trend.
What classifies him in this category of vindictive machines? Its (too) strong resemblance to a certain Ducati XDiavel. Although the Benelli 502 C multiplies the touches of style to give itself its own identity, the overall radius is confusing similarity. The Italian brand will have to support the reputation of Chinese designers’ photocopiers. A slap for Benelli’s honor.
However, the tubular steel trellis frame is very different, no single-arm, and an engine of another dimension.
The only common point between the engine of the 502 C and that of the Ducati comes down to the number of pistons. Then it’s the earthen pot … no, sand against the iron pot. Here we find a mechanism borrowed from the Leoncino and the TRK. The Chinese inline twin announces 500 cm3 for a final power of 47.6 horsepower. The torque is in the nails of the displacement, with 4.7 mkg. With such figures, the machine seems promised to the A2 license but in reality, it plunges into the much larger market of emerging countries. Whatever the watts; with that face there, it seems promised to a good career … in the countries of the far East.
Most of the components of the chassis enhance the picture. Because the gear is rather raised for a bike of this displacement. A 41mm inverted fork and 3 brake discs in total: 260mm at the front with 4-piston axial calipers and 240mm at the rear with a double-piston caliper. The weight is not very well placed, however. 217 kilos is a lot … even unacceptable for a machine of this capacity. A Honda 500 Rebel is 27 fewer. To say that the proto announced 160 only….
The 502 C seems to ignore jokes. It encourages its pilot to an attitude of cruising and style, with the feet placed forward, a long 21 liter tank, a minimalist rear and a look entirely in LEDs, itself hidden in a very … Duke 125 headlight. / 390 old generation.
We will not come back to the collapse of Benelli’s memory that the owners of the brand seem to ignore. Let’s try to define what the 402 C is. A motorbike to be seen and flog the driver in the streets of Bombay, Beijing, Shanghai, Hong Kong or Chongqing. Let’s see it as a 500 and it will be flattering; see her as a Benelli and you will be disillusioned.
