Retro boxer debuts at Villa d’Este

BMW is entering the cruiser segment again and is launching a new, large boxer engine. It is gently launched with concept bikes. The BMW Concept R 18 was presented at the Villa d’Este.

So far, BMW has only had two customizers run on the new boxer. Last December, the construction of the Japanese custom forge CUSTOM WORKS ZON around this new prototype engine was presented at the Yokohama Hot Rod Show. The Austin, Texas-based Customizer Revival Cycles created with their "The Revival Birdcage “Build a spectacular bike that puts the big boxer in the limelight. Now Bayern are pushing a study around the new boxer engine into the spotlight. The BMW Concept R 18 celebrates its premiere at the Villa d’Este.

Like in the 50s

The BMW Concept R18 appears as a low, elongated model with a rigid frame look and cantilever suspension that borrows heavily from the BMW models from the 1950s. The driver sits on a single, handcrafted leather rocking saddle behind a teardrop-shaped tank. The overall color scheme is classic black with fine white lines. A subtle yellow-gold lacquer effect gives the light double lines an exclusive touch.

The wire-spoke wheels – 21 inches at the front and 18 inches at the rear and covered with Metzeler tires – are covered with tightly held sheet metal fenders. A double disc brake system on the front wheel ensures deceleration. The dominant feature, however, is the simple boxer engine with air / oil cooling, which releases its exhaust gases into fishtail mufflers at the side. For the first time, BMW also confirms the displacement of 1,800 cc. The boxer is fed by a Solex double carburetor, as it was also installed on the BMW 2002 at the time. The engine badge bears the name of the concept bike. The engine block and gearbox are made of glass-bead-blasted aluminum, the valve covers and belt covers are hand-polished. The open cardan shaft may have a chrome finish. The electronics have been reduced to a starter and LED lighting. The graphics of the headlight design are reminiscent of the 1950s. The classic U-shape on the cover glasses of the time is interpreted here in the form of LED light elements.

The first production model with the new boxer will be available in 2020. Add a quote from BMW: “Just as exciting is the fact that BMW will be presenting a production bike in 2020 that is powered by the big boxer engine. If its appearance and handling are even remotely similar to the Concept R 18, cruiser fans can expect a very special treat. ”So we can look forward to it.
