Don’t look in the history of BMW; Montauk is not a pilot’s name but that of a small American town, in the state of New York, famous on the other side of the Atlantic for its lighthouse. New arrival in the range of BM cruisers, it fits between the standard R 1200 and the disproportionate R 1200 CL. The chassis and the dashboard are those of the CL, the saddlebags and the fork crown less; the silhouette copies the C, with the originality of a small additional headlight. The newcomer is an entirely separate design sporting a redesigned front end, new saddle and new side covers. This is a purist cruiser, devoid of fairings, just adorned with a beautiful transparent windshield. A motorcycle which, by virtue of its outstanding road qualities, will provide a lot of pleasure while meeting the highest level of safety and ecological criteria. The gearbox is slightly reworked and the 1170cm boxer engine³ has been given the dual ignition already known from other boxer models. Combustion is improved, which translates into a reduction in pollutant emissions and consumption and an improvement in smoothness. Engine power and torque, i.e. 61hp and 98Nm at 3000rpm, have not changed.
As on the CL, the front tire is a wide 150, ideal for showing off but not really happy for handling or for lively cornering. For the rear suspension, the new bike uses a combined spring / shock absorber with damping dependent on the travel – an innovation used among others on the R1200CL. Travel-dependent damping is characterized by the fact that damping gradually hardens as compression and rebound increase. Like the base Cruisers, the total travel stroke is 100mm.
Like all BMW motorcycles, the price is generous, in accordance with the exemplary finish of the Montauk and its comfort. A motorcycle to stroll on the coast of California.
