Great journeys, warming up by the fireside while looking at Kilimanjaro, eating an ice cream after a day’s driving in Sri Lanka, changing the route to follow the fearlessness – it’s a bit of all that transpires from the R 1250 GS Adventure. The sherpa of the BMW range becomes even more muscular by adopting the new 1254 cc engine. Like its sister GS and the entire R range, the time has come for more enthusiasm.

The Boxer engine has entered a new dimension. So much so that the manufacturer implements it at no load in all the models which are dedicated to it. The GSA is a big, imposing, almost intimidating motorcycle. No problem giving it wings with the new vigor it will find in the pistons. With a little more displacement and especially the ShiftCam technology, the power climbs to 136 horsepower, the torque to 14.5 mkg, and the availability of mechanical muscle becomes much more present. The ShiftCam allowing an offset of the intake camshafts and two different profiles for the opening of the valves. The Adventure can afford to draw unrestrainedly from an abundant supply of watts, especially at low and mid revs. In addition to variable distribution, the engine is optimized in terms of air intake, oil lubrication, and exhaust. More efficient, this Adventure is also heavier by 8 kilos.

BMW R 1250 GS Adventure 2020 We are emboldened to go far, always further. And she likes it. Except BM isn’t going to let you go with a backpack, a knife, and a slingshot. There are a whole bunch of companions among the electric wires. As standard, the R 1200 GS Adventure benefits from two driving modes, “Rain” and “Road”, as well as ASC traction control, ABS and Hill Start Control (hill start). You can easily and financially boost the endowment by typing in the Pro driving modes option. What unlocks a lot of functions:
The “Dynamic”, “Enduro”, “Dynamic Pro” and “Enduro Pro” riding modes, the latter two being configurable; DTC traction control, more efficient than ASC; ABS Pro, allowing the brake power to be modulated in curves; The new DBC engine brake control; Hill Start Control Pro, auto-active according to the inclination of the slope where you stopped (+/- 5%); and finally the Control Brake Light, a system that makes the brake light flash more or less quickly depending on the intensity of emergency braking, with the warning light coming on at the end of deceleration.

Still a little tech? How about LED headlights and a beautiful 16.5cm TFT color display. This “Connectivity” panel appeared as an option recently on the Enduro models of the Bavarian manufacturer. From now on, it is implanted in series everywhere. In addition to a supplied and modern display, it offers increased connectivity allowing a dose of interaction with smartphones. With the right equipment, you can listen to zique, make phone calls, and have access to a simplified navigation system. The “BMW Motorrad Connected App” makes the journey easier: you enter your destination, the phone and the GS display chat, then icons and brief information guide you to your destination. It is in series; if you want a more conventional GPS, with maps and multiple functions, there is the Navigator … at a steep price.

Let’s stay in the options catalog to see what’s new. In turn, the GSA can benefit from the semi-active ESA Next Generation suspension. Reading the road, constantly calculating the best possible damping according to the surface, the driving, the chosen Mode, the BM system also takes into account the on-board load to automatically compensate and level the attitude of the motorcycle. As always in Bavaria, the plethora of accessories and options will allow you to customize the GSA, for more adventure, comfort, efficiency, or all three. The saddle height can be adjusted to 890 or 910 mm; other saddles range from the lowered model to 820 mm up to a Rally version also at 910 mm. Also available are daytime running lights, aluminum suitcases, cruise control, shifter, heated grips, emergency call system, … No, there are too many..

BMW R 1250 GS Adventure 2020 Unlike the GS which did not change its plastic one iota when it went from 1200 to 1250, the Adventure wanted to subtly show that it had more in the stomach and shoes. Its shoulders are still as broad, imprisoning a 30-liter tank allowing long stages. But they gained aluminum elbows, new air intake vents and tubular reinforcements of a new design, significantly reinforced. The brake calipers are new while keeping the same technical data: two 305 mm discs at the front for 4-piston radial shoes and a 276 mm disc gniake by two pistons.

Do you fall for it? The silted mountains, the fishing in Timbuktu and the memories of the mist can’t wait any longer? You will first have to make a choice. The R 1250 GS Adventure does not offer you colors but themes.
The basic version stands out with black brake calipers and wheels, plus a touch of provocation with a red saddle top.
The Exclusive prefers gold for its calipers but abounds in gray and dark on the frame and various elements.
The HP is the one that stands out the most. With its Motorsport color and golden rims; and its more sporty side with a shorter windshield, a much smaller almost single-seater saddle, and protections on the bottom of the frame.

Renewed in its prerogatives with more punch in the engine, the R 1250 GS Adventure can boast of a new breath, an enriched standard electronic equipment, and possibilities of Ushuaian conquest just as much on the skin. Perfect illustration of the frontier devourer, the BM must maintain a strike force to resist the KTM 1290 Adventure R, Triumph 1200 Explorer XC, Multistrada 1200 Enduro Pro and other high caliber competitors.
