BMW R nineT Urban G / S (2017)

After the R nineT Scrambler, Pure and Racer, BMW presented another derivative of the R nineT in Milan with the BMW R nineT Urban G / S.

The BMW R. nineT Urban G / S pays homage to the BMW R 80 G / S presented in 1980. The echoes of the great mother of travel enduro bikes are clear, even if only externally, namely in the form of the design: characteristic narrow lamp mask, analog speedometer in the individual round instrument, bellows on the telescopic fork, air-cooled boxer, white paintwork, red seat.

Suspension travel identical to the R nineT Scrambler

Anyone who wants to see a real granddaughter after the great mother, i.e. a real travel enduro in the new BMW R nineT Urban G / S, has to be taught better. The similarities between R 80 G / S and Urban G / S are actually only on the outside. Because for the chassis, BMW simply used the R nineT Scrambler presented in 2015 for the Urban G / S, the spring travel is identical at 125 and 140 millimeters at the front and rear. The basic version of the Urban G / S also uses cast rims for the wheels, the enduro-typical wire-spoke wheels with 19 inch at the front and 17 inch at the rear are available as optional extras ex works.

The same applies to coarse first tires. The Stadt-G / S only has ABS as standard as an electronic assistance system, traction control (ASC) is available as an ex-works option. “As if made for relaxed country road surfing or light off-road excursions”, this is how BMW itself characterizes the fifth and, for the time being, probably last model in its Heritage series, which was launched in 2013 with the R nineT.

Prices and availability

The air-cooled, 1170 cubic centimeter boxer engine, which has now been brought up to Euro 4 level, is the same in all Heritage BMWs with 110 hp and 116 Newton meters of maximum torque. It comes from the last generation of the air-cooled R 1200 GS, which can now really pass through as the real granddaughter of the former R 80 G / S – which is why the name “Heritage” has its justification.

According to the manufacturer, the BMW R nineT Urban G / S is coming to the start of the 2017 season and costs from 13,000 euros.
