BMW X2City: BMW now builds scooters - but only with speed limit-scooters

BMW BMW Motorrad launches the E-Roller X2City in Germany at the beginning of February

A new legislative proposal prevented the market launch of the BMW X2City e-scooter at the end of 2017. Now the second attempt follows, but with a capped top speed.

Actually, BMW wanted to launch an electrically powered scooter called X2City with pedelec approval at the end of 2017. But the start was postponed to the beginning of February 2019 due to a regulation planned by the federal government on small electric vehicles. With the restart, the vehicle was adapted in detail to the new legal basis, which will allow legal use in public transport in the future.

20 km/h, 35 km range

As before, there is a 408 Wh lithium-ion battery in the running board of the e-scooter, which weighs a good 20 kilograms and drives a brushless hub motor in the rear wheel. Support from the electric motor only starts at a speed of 6 km/h. The driver can choose between the five speed levels 8, 12, 16, 20 and 20 km/h at the touch of a button. The pedelec variant announced for 2017 was still intended for a top speed of 25 km/h. The range is unchanged at 25 to 35 kilometers and the charging time is 2.5 hours. The originally planned price of around 2.400 euros.

Using the X2City on public roads is subject to more requirements than originally thought. The driver must be able to show at least a moped driving license. In addition, the scooter is subject to compulsory insurance and must therefore carry a small insurance number plate. BMW Motorrad takes over for the first 2.000 in Germany X2City sold the insurance costs for one year.

  2. Cars banned in Germany
Since it is now part of the chic tone of the media to frown on cars, the still car companies have to look for other fields of activity.
