We are not going to teach BMW to trail. Insolutely dominant in the category with the GS, it also has a strong punch in the field of maxi-trail-GT-Sport with the S 1000 XR. Transforming the S 1000 RR hypersportive crossover, you had to dare.
But with so many watts and high positioning, the machine was only aimed at a certain clientele. With the F 900 XR, the manufacturer offers it a much more accessible little brother. He will quickly come to challenge the star of the segment, a certain Yamaha, with almost the same objectives, a different engine and in-house technology with a strong spike of electronics..
An XR baby? Like baby-Yoda? It is undeniable that the F 900 XR cultivates a family resemblance. Except that her lighter stomach, her younger face, her less loaded rear section and the freshness of her lines give her a much more adolescent and slender appearance. Looks like the 900 weighs 50 kilos less than the 1000 (actually 7 kilos). We also feel the influence of the 9cento concept, both announcing and revealing. Colors inspire frivolity. Note that only the Exclusive finish brings hand guards as standard. The Sport receives a tinted screen, smaller.
The road bike has never had so many different aspects. Fashion, sustainability or way of riding, the landscape is teeming with machines playing on new or multiple tables. The technical gateways also allow extensive explorations. At Yam, the 900 Tracer is the “SUV” derivative of the MT-09. It’s pretty much the same for the 900 BM: the R roadster and the XR trail are intimately linked. There is a perimeter frame in both steel beams, similar to that of the F 750/850 GS. As on the F 900 R roadster, the front end shows willingness with an inverted 43mm fork, 4-piston radial brake calipers and 320mm discs. Gear for slightly or very excited roadsters. Except that the F 900 XR plays it multi-card and big on legs. The suspension travel is up, with 170 mm at the front and 172 mm for the rear monoshock. Thus reassembled, and given the position of the handlebars, the pilot will have the impression of dominating the road, of appreciating it from above, as befits the trails and other machines mocking them. In front of him, the tank is fed up with steel, and prefers to fall in love with plastic. The saddle height is reasonable for this type of bike, with 825 mm. BMW has planned enough solutions to review this altitude. Between the different saddles and the lowered plate, the seat can be fixed from 775 to 870 mm.
The engine decided to be more vindictive than that. When you defend a certain notion of sport, you need a fairly energetic piece of response. First thing to do, take the parallel twin of the F 850 GS. Then, spread the walls 2 mm to afford 42 cm3 more. A small 0.4 point increase in the compression ratio, the adoption of forged pistons, revised cylinder heads, this allows the power to be inflated to 10 horsepower. The F 900 XR displays 105 horsepower from its 895 cm3, which the latter will seek at 8,500 rpm. Curiously, the torque has not changed, with 9.4 mkg at the maximum. But it is more present in almost all regimes. Half a kilogram more on average, except around 6200 trs where the maximum is obtained a little later. Now that BMW has unsheathed its color screen on certain motorcycles, and that the competition does the same, it is impossible to go back to needle or LCD models. Except for vintage.
The 6.5-inch dashboard receives graphics inspired by those of the latest S 1000 RR. Everything is controlled from the left stalk, with the Multi Controller wheel.
As standard, BMW is making the judicious effort to implement its connectivity system. And yet, the F 900 XR has another weapon to surprise: its price. Surprisingly well placed, right in the wake of the 900 Tracer and Tiger 900. Except that to take advantage of the high-tech that it can sweat, you have to type in the options sector. Area where BMW has cleverly worked the temptation.
Where to start ? By the Keyless Ride, which allows you to leave the key in your pocket and automatically lock / unlock the ignition, the steering and the fuel flap … Or by the ESA Dynamic suspension, whose tendency adjusts the rear damping to you. in a thousandth of a second – depending on your ride and the chosen theme, smoother “Road” or stiffer “Dynamic”.
If there was only that. There is also adaptive lighting when cornering. LEDs hidden in the headlights light up when the grinding wheel takes more than 10 ° of angle, above 10 km / h. You can also graft a daytime signature with an optical fiber that emphasizes the look.
Despite this, we missed the turn?!? Ouch, it hurts the leg stuck behind the ear. Also optional, the intelligent emergency call can put you in touch with the BMW Call Center. From there, the emergency chain is set up.
When the leg is put back in place, we can use other modules, such as the Up & Down shifter or the central stand. Which leads us to hesitate on heated grips or cruise control. Suddenly, the bill has just exploded. Basic, it is familiar with an 821 Monster – full of options, it would exchange for an 1100 africa Twin…
For Driving Modes, the allocation is in two parts. As standard, the F 900 XR receives the “Road” and “Rain”. These manage the response to the throttle grip, ABS and ASC traction control..
On the options side, the Pro package provides many more parameters. Including Dynamic Brake Control (DBC), Engine Brake Torque Regulation (MSR), Dynamic Traction Control DTC (on request), Responsive Cornering ABS Pro and two additional Modes, “Dynamic” and “ Dynamic Pro ”. Their functions are detailed at the bottom of the sheet.
The BMX F 900 XR is defined as a mixture of sport, touring and experience. It takes above all the same ambition as the S 1000 XR in a more reasonable size. The “mid-size” twin has evolved sufficiently to rub shoulders with the heart of the segment. We will still regret having a list of options as long as the arm, but it allows us to glimpse or afford the deployment of BMW technologies. Has the 900 Tracer found a match for it? The Japanese three-cylinder is far from worrying about the Sino-Bavarian twin. But the BMW crest can be a serious beacon on the way.
Driving Modes:

– In ” Dynamic », The engine tuning obeys an optimal gas intake and the DTC and ABS Pro systems are adapted to high friction coefficients on the road, the take-off detection for the front wheel and the rear wheel does not intervene until later. The intervention of the MSR engine brake torque regulation is also reduced. The default setting for Dynamic ESA – as far as this function is available – is the “Dynamic” damper setting..
– The mode ” Dynamic Pro »Offers the very sporty rider all the possibilities to adapt the machine optimally to his own wishes and needs. Three throttle characteristics, three ABS settings and four DTC settings are available. The level of intervention of the regulation systems can thus be adapted according to wishes to a very sporty driving style, which can go as far as deactivating the take-off assistants and a very late intervention of all the regulation systems..
