Garbage collection in Hamm

Die Hard? do not die! Bruce Willis has a message for cyclists

Trucks have a large blind spot – this always causes tragic accidents with cyclists when turning. The city of Hamm has now come up with a special trick that can save lives – listen carefully.

Truck drivers have a problem: They are enthroned high above the traffic and, especially in the blind spot on the right, easily overlook pedestrians or cyclists when turning. Serious accidents happen again and again. The city of Hamm has now come up with something: it uses special warning systems. Loudspeakers hang on the side of some refuse collection trucks. "caution! The vehicle bends on the right. Please keep your distance" resounds when turning – and with the unmistakable German dubbing voice of action star Bruce Willis. The warning system from Paul Wiegand GmbH from Eichenzell is intended to remind cyclists at the intersection that the driver at the wheel of the garbage truck might overlook them.

  1. Yes, always the trucks
The only strange thing is that we cyclists always insist on our rights. Unfortunately, we always forget … with whom the bumps go where. Red lights, bad brakes, no lights and drunk when possible. So please, a truck does not turn off at 50 kmh. If I’m the weaker one, I just have to pay more attention to it. Drivers with cell phones in their hands are worse. Even if 2017 the penalties are higher, it is not enough…

  2. There is no blind spot!
The article begins with the words "Trucks have a large blind spot ". In Wikipedia it says "Since 2009, trucks over 3.5 t in the European Union have not had a blind spot either in front or to the right." Yes, what is correct now?? Could it be that there are mainly truck drivers who are inattentive, careless and negligently turning? If there is such an additional device, then the truck driver would not have to be warned about the cyclist, instead of the other way around? How should the cyclist react when a truck appears to his left and calls out, "vehicle turns. Keep your distance!"? Stop? Drive faster? Drive right onto the sidewalk? Dissolve into thin air? Incidentally, such a device has an aggravating effect on the truck driver’s penalties should an accident occur.
