Business - BMW Motorrad reaped the jackpot in 2012 - Used BMW

Beaten on the wire by KTM in the number of motorcycles sold last year, BMW crushes its Austrian competitor in terms of turnover. In all, the 117,109 BMWs – and Husqvarna … – generated revenue of € 1.49 billion. BMW takes stock of 2012.

BMW is on the rise: in 2012, the German manufacturer delivered 106,358 of its own motorcycles (2% more than the previous year) and 10,751 additional motorcycles via the Husqvarna brand, since (+ 15.8% ).

The total therefore amounts to 117,109 machines, a little more than KTM (and Husaberg ?!) with 107,142 motorcycles sold worldwide in 2012 (read). But in terms of turnover, it is BMW that is exploding the meters…

The propeller firm has indeed achieved a "Kolossal" turnover of 1.49 billion euros in 2012, almost three times that of Katoche and more than twice that of Ducati (606 million euros as a reminder, read).

On the other hand, we note that at the same time, BMW Motorrad saw its profit before interest and taxes (EBIT) decline by -80% and reach only 9 million euros (against 45 million in 2011), while its profit before tax ("profit before tax") plunges -85.4%, capping at 6 million euros.

The leaders want to be reassuring, however: these drops in profits are the "result of a new direction taken by the BMW group in the management of its motorcycle activity", they calmly expose.

Contacted by Site, BMW France officials are conducting the internal investigation in order to tell us what the nature and purpose of this change in strategy may well be: stay connected !

"The past year has been the most prosperous in the history of the group with record levels in terms of sales, turnover and profits.", continues the chairman of the management board of BMW AG, Norbert Reithofer."We have achieved, or even exceeded, all of our objectives for 2012, in a particularly trying market context".

The other – and main – branches of BMW are also doing very well: sales of BMW cars have climbed worldwide by + 11.6% compared to 2011 (1,540,805 vehicles), those of the Mini brand grew by + 5.8% (301,526 units) and those of Rolls-Royce were maintained at 3,575 units (+ 1%).

At the same time, the "Financial Services" department saw its activity grow in 2012 by + 11.7%, alone representing a turnover of 19.55 billion euros! The number of rental and credit contracts increased by + 12.1% (1,341,296 signatures to be exact in 2012).

Finally, it should be noted that the group increased its workforce by 5.6% last year, bringing the total number of employees to 105,876 people worldwide..
