Business - The JPMS is establishing itself as the benchmark trade fair for motorcycle pros -

After Avignon and Montpellier, the 3rd edition of the JPMS was held this weekend in Lyon. A more central and spacious place for a meeting that has become essential for motorcycle professionals. Balance sheet.

The third Professional Motorcycle and Scooter Days (JPMS) were held on February 6 and 7 in Lyon Eurexpo, a more central and spacious place for this now unmissable meeting for motorcycle accessories and equipment manufacturers..

Visitors, mainly dealers or repair shops, were able to discover over two days the offer of the main importers and manufacturers of accessories, technical parts and clothing.

Techno parade

In terms of technological innovation, note the footrests mounted on pivots from PivotPegz: an invention from Australia and intended for all-terrain, which allows the footrests to pivot on their axis so that the rider’s feet remain in good contact when the motorcycle changes attitude, especially when crossing. Adaptable on most motorcycles, they are sold for 199 euros.

There are also several indicators of the gear engaged, determined from the engine speed and the speed of the motorcycle. Coming from England, they are offered by Datatool (Tournay Distribution) and Acumen (ICA Security).

Also interesting, the intensity modulator of the headlight from Kisan Technologies which should delight supporters of automatic lighting of lights during the day: approved in the United States but not (yet?) In France, this system is based on a flashing headlight which would make it possible to distinguish motorcycles from cars if daytime running lights were to become widespread.

Communicating headsets

Among the new more classic products, Caberg offers a helmet with an integrated double visor (smoke and transparent), a system already seen at Schuberth. No trace, however, of helmets with integrated Bluetooth headset. In general, it is quite difficult to find motorcycle specific products for navigation or communication systems..

The German Baehr, however, exhibited a particularly sophisticated intercom system, allowing listening to up to four different sources (intercom, radio, CD and navigation) while defining orders of priority. Very high-end at an unfortunately quite surreal price of 450 to 900 euros !

The charge of luggage

When it comes to luggage, the trend is clearly towards modular luggage, with different elements of variable capacity that are stacked on top of each other. Thus, Bagster always offers its tank covers in a varnished finish in the exact color of the motorcycle..

Bodywork tuning trend

On the body parts side, the offer is always plethora of mudguards, windshields, plate holders, etc. Manufacturers are surfing on the fashion for tuning – a sector almost absent from these 3rd JPMS – and offer a wide choice of materials, shapes and colors while keeping the concern of offering parts that comply with the legislation. Note the offer from Powerpaint, a Toulon company that offers paints in the exact colors of the main motorcycle manufacturers.

Infusion exhausts

In terms of technical parts, the exhaust pipe sector is still looking gray: 2003 really marked a turning point for the profession with the practically total disappearance of unapproved pipes (see in particular). The pistards are now the only customers of these products, generally high-end, and some brands are much better prepared than others: German law requires, the Austrian Remus already had a complete range of approved jars with Revolution. The Spanish Ixil, more focused on entry level and replacement, is also moving towards the approved pot.

Conversely, iconic brands like Devil, Micron and Yoshimura have had to adapt their offer to survive and are now imported in drop-outs. In a generally declining market, the pot does not seem to make as much dream as before and the noise and performance aspects have given way to aesthetics and sound. Not to mention that motorcycle manufacturers have significantly improved the quality of the original pots which are often an integral part of the design (mode of the pots under the saddle, Yamaha MT-01 …).

The manufacturers of pots are therefore now looking for a second wind in the quads market, particularly present in JPMS as well as buggies. A strange finding in a trade fair devoted to motorcycles and scooters, even if it must be admitted that this growing market brings fresh air to many manufacturers and dealers. Be careful, however, not to kill the goose that lays the golden eggs, because in order to position themselves in this juicy market, many dealers offer the same machines of Asian origin under their brand. Faced with this excessive offer, the customer risks getting lost and may legitimately wonder about the quality of after-sales service….

Tire outsiders

Two motorcycle tire outsiders made the trip to Lyon: Continental, imported by MAD, with an interesting road range and a very specific product, the TKC, a nipple tire adapted to the dimensions of large trails like the BMW R1200GS or the Honda Varadero . Limited to 160 km / h on the road, the TKC should allow these pachyderms to go frolic in the mud … Sensations guaranteed !

For his part, the British Avon presented the world premiere of its supersport tire, the Viper AV60 / AV61, which will be officially presented in Barcelona on February 10. Directly from competition, it is available in three versions ranging from pure track to more road use (Michelin Pilot Power type).

Avon is also playing the card of niche markets with some rather specific tires such as the only approved rain tire developed especially for the Tourist Trophy, a new modern rubber tire but in dimensions adapted to the machines of the 80s, the AM26, a Very complete range of Vintage tires and extreme tires for custom tuning with a width of … 330 !

High-end shock absorbers

On the shock absorber side, the aftermarket is rather difficult: volumes stagnate and the price of raw materials has exploded. Here again, manufacturers are therefore looking for their salvation in the quad, which has three shocks instead of just one on most motorcycles. With its strategy of a single model at a reasonable price, easy to adjust and promoting comfort, EMC has really transformed the market by offering an alternative to very high-end shock absorbers from the competition like Ohlins or White Power. But EMC is now expanding its offering by offering more advanced models with two and even four settings..

Conversely, a brand like Bitubo went downmarket to offer a shock absorber without a separate cylinder at a price competitive with EMC.

Note also that the Nice company Dimensia is trying to import the German brand Wilbers, leader in its country of origin, while the young company 4.42 Suspension, based in Aix-en-Provence, is resolutely embarking on the all-terrain shock absorber. high-end with an oleo-pneumatic product (without metal spring), directly from rally and rally-raids car competition, sold for almost 1,000 euros.

The tools of the pros

Several professional tool manufacturers such as Zone Interdite and Marolo Test offered diagnostic tools for the most recent injection and ignition systems at relatively reasonable prices: for 2,000 euros and 300 euros annual subscription, professionals can have a universal diagnostic tool regularly updated according to new models.

To have a gas analyzer and to be able to adjust the antipollution systems, it takes about 7,500 euros, which is still significantly cheaper than a dyno. This should reassure bikers about the ability of independent workshops to maintain modern motorcycles !

Products of the year

The professionals gathered in Lyon also elected the "products of the year" in each of the nominated categories:

  • Category Road helmets : Caberg 104 (transparent and smoked double screen full face helmet)

With the success of this third edition, the JPMS are now an integral part of the "PMF" (French Motorcycle Landscape) and have established themselves as an essential working tool for all motorcycle professionals, French but also European. Organized with talent by Jean-Pierre Bonato and the Alice Evenements agency, these professional days now have a bright future ahead of them, thanks to a location as central and accessible as Lyon. Roll on 2006 !
