Business - Who are the French bikers? -

One in five bikers is a biker: a survey by the Cercle Moto GE Money Bank conducted by the GIPA presents the main characteristics of the French biker. Age, gender, behavior, budget: 1000 people were scrutinized. Balance sheet.

"Our objective is to know the behavior of the biker consumer in France", explains Jean-Jacques Le Moigne, president of the Cercle Moto de GE Money Bank, from the outset, presenting the results of a two-year survey of 800 bikers (over 50 cc) and 200 mopeds (less than 50 cc), each met individually and at home for 40 minutes.

Subsidiary of American giant General Electric and world leader in consumer credit, GE Money Bank is also the financial partner of Kawasaki, Triumph, KTM, Aprilia and MSA (Kymco and Roxon).

Getting to know the biker consumer better

To better know this famous "consumer biker", the Cercle Moto de GE Money Bank relied on the expertise of the Groupement interprofessionnel de l’Automobile (GIPA), an independent observatory which has been carrying out such studies in the automobile for 15 years and has just expanded its activity to motorbike.

"We want to provide the best possible information to companies so that they can best position themselves in each segment of the motorcycle market.", specifies Jean-Jacques Delage, president and founder of GIPA, present in nine European countries, in Latin America and soon in China and in Eastern Europe.

So, dear "consumer biker"Who are you? How do you ride? How much do you spend? Why do you ride a motorcycle? You don’t know? You watch M6? No big deal, here are the answers !

One in five bikers is a female biker

First of all, know that despite all your efforts to assert your virility in front of your friends, one in five you are a woman: 25% among mopeds and more than 15% among bikers. "It’s a real revelation for the profession", considers Jean-Jacques Delage"because until now, few manufacturers have considered women as a full-fledged customer segment".

You are barely over 20 if you ride a cyclo, but almost 40 if you ride a motorcycle. You live either in the Paris region (25% of those over 50 cc), or in the cambrousse (a third of cyclists), or somewhere in between.

In terms of expenses, you spend on average 1,863 euros per year on your mount, including the pilot’s equipment: 28% for gasoline, 26% for insurance, 20% for maintenance, 11% for repayment of your credit, 8% for accessories and 7% for repairs. This average budget is of course lower for cyclists (920 euros per year on average, including 40% gasoline costs!) And higher for motorcycles and scooters over 50 cc (1887 euros per year, i.e. a maintenance budget, accessories and repairs equal to that of a car). Men spend more than women on their mount (1,800 euros against 1,100), while in Ile-de-France, the average budget explodes to 2,400 euros per year..

Of the 2,441,000 motorized two-wheelers currently circulating in France (1,387 million under 50 cc and 1.054 million over 50 cc), you mainly ride on a 7-year-old machine: the majority of cyclists have 6.1 years old while 23% of motorcycles are between 2 and 3 years old, the same proportion as those over 10 years old. "These figures reflect both the sharp increase in registrations since 1996, which peaked in 1999, and the advanced age of the fleet on large engines, which implies greater vigilance for maintenance.", specifies Jean-Jacques Le Moigne.

20% of enthusiasts

On the passion side, according to the GIPA study, only 20.9% of you use your two-wheeler frequently, read the specialized press and participate in motorcycle races. So you are a "passionate biker"but you come behind the"passive biker", who rides frequently but has little interest in the world of motorcycles (31.3%), and"hedonistic biker", who only uses his machine for leisure and is not very interested in motorcycles (24.4%). There are still more of you than"the city in a hurry"who uses his two-wheeler occasionally and has little interest in motorcycles (12.4%) and that simple"user", which rolls frequently but really hits the mark (11%).

As for repairs, you are only 4% to carry out entirely alone the maintenance of your motorcycle (12% for cyclists), 38% to buy your parts from a distributor and to do the assembly with the help of a third party "without giving rise to an invoice"(46% for cyclists) and finally 58% to entirely delegate the interventions to a repairer (43% for cyclists). And when you entrust your motorcycle to a professional you research above all"reliability of repairs"(60%) and"a cheap price"(35%), like in a car, ahead of"effective advice", a "good welcome"and finally the"speed"of the intervention.

Strong breakthrough in fast service

If the motorcycle aftermarket is still dominated by manufacturers via their dealer network, both for purchase and for maintenance, we note, however, as in the automobile sector, a strong breakthrough in rapid service with the development of brands. such as Doc Biker.

Note also that 60% of two-wheelers are bought second-hand, that only 20% are paid with the help of a credit organization (excluding bank loans) and that 40% are purchased directly from an individual..
