The scooter, a breakfast toy? Nay: the figure of the young commuter in a tracksuit with his helmet at the elbow who goes to the rear wheel is not representative of the scooter user, according to a study published by AXA (*) on the eve of the World Two-Wheeled and who estimates his average age at 46.

However, according to the study published by the insurer AXA, driving these machines remains more dangerous than that of other categories of two-wheelers. The figures and the feelings of non-scooter riders recall this reality.

"The typical scooter rider got old", explains to Site Christiane Graziani, director of AXA Prevention:"He is 46 years old, 86% male, but the proportion of women is increasing rapidly. He is a middle manager, married with children and is also a motorist. 73% of them drive a 125, mainly to get to work".

Although it is more flattering for manufacturers to associate their scooters with a pretty young girl style Dolce Vita rather than a mustachioed executive strolling towards the towers of La Defense, the average scooterist is therefore indeed a man … But the most exciting of this AXA study is in one figure: 41% of scooter riders believe that two-wheelers increase insecurity! An opinion widely shared by motorists (57%) and bikers (58%).

And the statistics prove them right, since scooters have 2.5 times more accidents than other two-wheelers! Hence a strong expectation of better training in driving a two-wheeler for holders of the B license. Thus, 45% of scooter riders wish to adopt preventive measures against them. Dangerous and aware of being: this is one of the lessons of this study.

Since January 2007, motorists who wish to drive a 125 cc must already follow a three-hour training course (read).

Some insurers also offer optional courses which give rise to premium reductions for those who participate. Will they become mandatory? We can ask ourselves the question, as the increase in the number of insureds is strong. Today, one in five two-wheelers sold is a scooter, and the market grew in 2006 by 37%. Growth particularly supported by the Ile-de-France and PACA regions, which together host two-thirds of the country’s scooters.

"20% of our new two-wheeler contracts are for scooters and 40% for 125 cm3 ", adds Christiane Graziani. With 37.5% growth last year (read, 125 cc scooters are actually revving up and the phenomenon is accelerating. Because if the motorcycle remains a choice of the heart, the scooter is the one reason: a practical vehicle to get to work avoiding traffic jams and public transport.

(*) Survey carried out in June 2007 by telephone with a sample of 1,222 people (840 motorists and 382 drivers of two-wheelers) selected according to the quota method.
