From 0 to 100 km / h in just 2.89 seconds: stylish orbiting

3 cylinders in line, 2,458 cm3, 167 hp, 221 Nm, 291 kg, from 22,400 euros

The motorbike universe is conducive to preparations of all kinds, especially those incorporating an extraordinary, superlative engine. A childhood dream, a great water heater, two wheels and zou! But one day, the craziest ideas take shape even with a respectable builder. And not the least. Triumph, a venerable English firm, lost its composure in 2004 to dare hyper-displacement. The Rocket III was born.

If the model takes its name from the eponymous BSA of the 1960s, itself a copy of Hinkley’s 750 Trident, the brand’s first power cruiser adorned its name with new milestones. The mechanics affirmed the Triumph signature: a three-cylinder in-line drives the Leviathan. Each cycle of the three 101.6 mm pistons then engulfs 2.294 cm3 of explosive mixture…. If the block comes out 142 hp at only 5,750 rpm, it is above all its strength that marks the spirits: 200 Nm of torque at 2,500 revolutions / minute; 90% of which are available from 1,800 rpm. And marketing, to boast of accelerations of 1.2G. Not bad for a 400 kilogram loaner machine in working order. Excess ends in 2017, Euro 4 obliges.

But the Englishman is stubborn. He’s like a Breton, but big. That is to say. For 2020, Triumph is therefore delivering a brand new opus of its big-hearted rocket. Revealed through a luxurious limited edition TFC (Triumph Factory Custom), the novelty is generally available in R and GT versions. Always more efficient, sensational and seductive, the Rocket 3 is revealed under the sun of Tenerife, in the Canary Islands, during a bodybuilding test. In translation Molière: muscular aesthetics.

Discovery

Overpowered models, there have already been a few in the motorcycle world. We will mention in particular the incredible Boss Hoss and its 5.2-liter V6 borrowed from the automobile! And why not the Dodge Tomahawk concept…. Currently, the Ducati Diavel is also a performance monster. These machines always panic the senses of bikers, vision included, by their exuberance.

The Triumph Rocket 3 RThe Triumph Rocket 3 R

Extreme adjectives therefore fill the Rocket 3 press kit. It’s hard to find an undue exaggeration as the machines seem to live up to their pedigree. Rather judge. Let’s start with their line as powerful as it is stylish. The previous version evoked more of a neo-retro machine and more retro than neo. The news are power cruisers that are closer to a state-of-the-art sports roadster, despite their substantial length. Like high-tech fashion athletes, the English take on the spirit of their elders, but evoke strength and aesthetics at all levels. On these machines, aluminum is the main metal, used in abundance, solid, in sheets, brushed, blasted, polished…. Almost similar, the Rockets differ only slightly: handlebars, saddle height, weight and some equipment, the GT also having a specific backrest and seats. Apart from that, they are the same.

Subtly raised by a 17-inch front wheel against 16 at the rear, the model measures you. It appeals with its two LED optics (like all other lights) whose ring of daytime running diodes frames the historic T logo. Wearing a screw-on cap hiding the TFT screen, the headlights precede an 18-liter tank. Its unique family lines are noticeably widened, but still fluid. A brushed stainless steel strap and an aluminum Monza-type cap complete the set. Supported by an aluminum shell, the large pilot saddle is accompanied by a more frustrating seat for the passenger in the R version. The GT does better, but without offering, either, grab handles. Sheathed, the very short rear hull ends with a superb arched light.

The whole is based on a brand new aluminum frame, much more compact, combining aluminum elements bolted together. It greatly reduces the mass of the hyper cruiser. The molded front piece houses meshed forced air inlets. Hardly visible, the central sections are linked to the two massive forged and profiled side plates behind the engine. On the other hand, surrounded by…. plastic unfortunately, the imposing radiator forms like a muscle car grille. Between the two thrones the essential attribute of the Rocket: its mega three cylinders in line.

The block is a pure marvel, associating aeronautical and naval style signing an exceptional mechanics with the admission on one side and exhaust on the other. It incorporates many details and finishes, enhancing its machined fin housings. On the gearbox side, the stylized T hits the metal of the engine like a seal. By using the latter as a load-bearing element, the frame design contributes to an overall weight reduction of Rocket 3s over 40 kg. Now 15% lighter, the new generations display an ever more breathtaking weight-to-torque ratio.

Because the heart of the giant grows ever more impressive; the new 2,458cc three-cylinder is the world’s largest engine dedicated to a production motorcycle. It benefits from several improvements reducing its masses of 18 kg. Thus, a new crankcase (minus 11 kg), a new lubrication system comprising a dry sump and an integrated oil tank (minus 3.9 kg) and new crankshaft balancer shafts (minus 3.6 kg ) lighten the titanic mechanics. The latter now delivers 167 hp at 6,000 revolutions (red zone at 7,000 revs) and 221 Nm of torque at 4,000 revolutions. Very different values from those of the predecessor. Moreover, its bore stroke ratio of 110.2 mm x 85.9 mm (before 101.6 x 94.3) confirms the increase in the size of the pistons and the reduction of the stroke, for much lower inertia and a new character to the max. -three cylinders. Triumph announces once again an impressive acceleration: from 0 to 100 km / h in just 2.89 seconds. How many G is that? Surely more points…. but one is enough for pleasure.

Then there is an assisted hydraulic clutch that lightens the load and reduces lever effort. Smoother, stronger and lighter than a conventional gearbox, a new six-speed helical-toothed element collects and transmits the increased torque of the maxi-cruiser. An optional upshift and downshift shifter will ease your star rush.

At the same time, the breath rushes through hydroformed exhaust manifolds. Parrying the right side of the Rockets, they make up the most elegant and obvious visual signature. They extend to three streamlined silencers, two on the same side, the third on the opposite side, almost under the machine, ensuring a certain sound capital. Practical question, the maintenance intervals are reduced to 16,000 km (simple overhaul) and the valve clearance is every 32,000 …. !

Of course, who says rocket says advanced electronics. To get into orbit in the right orbit, it is better to stay the course. The Continental Inertial Unit is there for this, constantly calculating the bank angle by measuring roll, pitch, yaw and acceleration to manage ABS response and traction control. The latter can be deactivated. Road, Rain, Sport and Custom modes adjust the engine response and traction control, easily selectable from the handlebars (even in traffic) thanks to the backlit controls. Finally, cruise control and anti-reverse function at start-up make it easier to get started..

The new Rocket 3 R and GT are equipped with a fully adjustable Showa "piggyback" monoshock (rebound, compression and preload). Same origin for the imposing inverted fork of 47 mm adjustable in rebound and compression supporting the front axle. And to ride long and far (and withstand the mechanical vigor) what could be better than a gimbal? He also takes care of his plastic and his contrasts. This single-sided swingarm carries an aluminum rear license plate holder.

Dedicated Avon Cobra Chrome tires in 150/80 and 240/50 adorn the lightweight 17 and 16-inch cast aluminum rims with 10 split-spoke and variable section. Already particularly neat in black finish on the Rocket 3 R, the GT model sports elements in machined finish. Really classy.

The new Rocket 3 features the ultimate in Italian Brembo Stylema one-piece radial calipers, four-piston. That is to say the performance of the machine. And, associated with the weight of 317 kilos (320 in GT), it must be that. These lightweight, compact calipers have reduced volume around the pistons and brake pads to produce immediate braking response. This new design also increases airflow around the brake pads, allowing the calipers to cool down faster for even greater efficiency. They are usually found on hypersports. But above all this ABS braking is combined by electronic and mechanical. Pressing the lever causes modulated action on the rear, depending on the force applied by the pilot and the calculation of the inertial unit.

Steering and steering lock are done without a key. However, it will be very useful for refueling. Housed under its aluminum cover, we regret in passing a screw cap without fixing ….

The Rocket 3 has many beautiful parts. Airbox cover and oil and coolant tank caps Monza type in brushed aluminum, fins machined on the crankcases, cylinder head cover and camshaft cover, perforated and brushed thermal guards. The English are superbly finished, the metal or plastic surfaces flawless, the fit of the parts as well. No unnecessary or unsightly cables or wires appear, even on the handlebars !

Rocket 3 R and GT differ in seat height. The first raised its pilot to 773 mm from the ground. Its passenger will accommodate a long seat, but less thick than that of the touring version. The latter sits his master at 750 mm and the passenger enjoys a softer seat accompanied by a welcome backrest. Its massive brushed aluminum supports are very attractive. On both models, the eventual passenger will be able to deploy its pretty retractable aluminum footrests integrated into the sides. New and truly remarkable.

More importantly, the riding position also differs between the two models. The R version is equipped with a roadster type handlebar and footrests in the axis of the pelvis. More touring atmosphere on the GT which logically opposes a more touring handlebar, placing the handles closer to the pilot. The boots are supported by widely advanced cruiser-type supports. These controls can be set to two vertical positions (0mm / -15mm) on the R, while those on the GT adjust to three horizontal positions (-25mm / 0mm / + 25mm).

The new 2nd generation TFT color display instrument panel offers two dynamic and customizable display themes. The screen angle is adjustable for optimal visibility regardless of the size of the pilot and the information displayed is easily controlled thanks to the new backlit controls.

The Rocket 3 is compatible with a GoPro control system exclusively available from Triumph. This equipment allows the action camera to be controlled using an optional Bluetooth connectivity module. The TFT screen displays GoPro camera controls, connection and status as simple icons, while the pilot easily controls photo and video functions with the buttons. Unfortunately not available for our test.

Another feature powered by Google, the GPS reminder. This Triumph exclusive makes it easier to navigate the MyTriumph app. Direction instructions, route stops, arrival destination and points of interest (hotels, gas stations, restaurants, etc.) are displayed on the instrument panel as symbols and icons. In addition, the Bluetooth system allows the use of a telephone and an intercom.

In the city

Awakening a 2,500 cm3 block is always a moment of pleasure. A deep cough starts the syncopated rhythm of the three cylinders in line. Full and deep, the tenor’s voice rings true and dynamic. The throttle reveals a discreet, but sympathetic reversing torque, gently rocking the Triumph to the left. A judiciously limited movement due to the fact that clutch and balance shaft are counter-rotating to that of the crankshaft. The reduced inertia of the mechanics is immediately noticeable, the engine taking its turns without dragging.

Obviously, maneuvers at low speed or with the engine off are reminiscent of the laws of physics. More than 300 kilos requires a certain circumspection and a correct physical state. With its wheelbase of 1,557 mm, the turning radius is wide, but ultimately not insane. We will do it twice in a narrow street.

Necessarily full at all speeds, the tri-cylinder removes the crew in an ample softness. Be careful with the throttle on the first reports, the unusual torque is still present. But a little less sensational. Higher perched (max at 4,000 rpm), it already gives a slightly different face to rockets from across the Channel.

Precise selection, neutral gearbox and extremely smooth clutch control contribute to the approval of a hyper available engine. Able to evolve at 1,500 rpm in town on fourth gear, the English block is a pleasure for the senses. Mixing deep rumblings and gurgling nautical hot water, its subtly spicy velvety charm at all times.

Less flattering, the mirrors blur their image a bit and offer little scope. Moreover, it is time to take some of the field. If the Rocket 3 certainly appreciates showing off in the city, the narrow urbanities do not fit well with its spatial surname. It’s time to put the crew into orbit.

Motorway and expressways

5, 4, 3, 2, 1…. Ignition. With a cavernous roar of airbox and exhausts, the Triumph hyper cruiser raises its nose and leaves the ground a little. 221 Nm of torque tears off the asphalt, melts the rear rubber and brings the horizon closer to the visor fairly quickly. In this suddenly restricted space, we quickly reach over 210 km / h at only 5,000 laps. The machine is then electronically limited and the acceleration ceases. Sensational, the block does not seem as explosive as expected. Its new characteristics give it a wider range of use.

The Triumph Rocket 3 GT on the fast trackThe Triumph Rocket 3 GT on the fast track

Converted to aero-brake, you won’t last long, even on the GT and its short bubble. Returned to the legal motorway, the three-cylinder purrs at 3,000 revolutions per minute. On board, everything is smooth, while waiting for the next rotation of the right handle. Some will wonder about the relevance of a 6th report on such an engine. Euro 5, limited fuel consumption in the long run and a more efficient gearbox staging are probably the likely answers to this question. There is another that we ask ourselves. What about the efficiency of maxi-Anglaises on the roads? You have to check it out quickly. Here the exit.

Departmental

Offering such machines to the test on very winding and narrow tracks proves Triumph’s confidence in the cycle part of its cruisers. Is right. Of course, the Rocket 3 are not bikes. It is also advisable to keep in mind their XXL size. Quite logically, when the pace picks up, there are not many trajectories. By applying rapid coiled steering, we can then maintain a high pace on the handlebars. Especially since the correct ground clearance allows you to pass the bends at good speed, even the tightest. Its column angle of 27.9 ° and its larger front wheel do not penalize its evolutions. Just the connections taken on the angle testify to a typical geometry. And, greatly reduced, the weight of the machines benefits the dynamic ease.

Stalled in fourth, we take full advantage of the voluptuousness of the block. Its availability makes it possible to maintain high gears at 60 km / h. Less flexible than before, the tri-cylinder requires entering a report to better catapult the pins. Perhaps less violent, it delivers a more constant pleasure. As presumed, its modified bore stroke ratio gives it a greater usable speed range. Thus, from 3,500 to 6,000 revolutions, the 2.5-liter triple plays high-sensation locomotives. Distilling good vibrations, the block testifies to an attractive mechanical life resulting from its deep bowels. Both its strength and its track and the amplitude of its displacement give it a unique personality. Although lightened, the moving assembly retains a slightly fat roundness essential to the approval of such an engine..

Now more widely available, the torque is enriched by a higher power that is just as usable. The torque curves intersect at 4,500 rpm to ensure the best performance. In the towers, the boiler is at ease, blowing in a storm in its profiled exhausts. The soundtrack is just as majestic as the mechanics. The Rocket 3 propels its pilot with explosive charm.

At high speed, traction control and brakes are put to the test. Both give complete satisfaction, ensuring stability and security at all times. Placed on the sides of their 240mm gommard, the Rocket 3 seem to crumble the road, spinning towards the next bend. The right lever is then grabbed with one finger. Powerful and perfectly controllable, the deceleration is up to the acceleration. And the engine brake allows further adjustment to amplify the effect. Particularly appreciable, the system combined with the lever is also a real plus. In curves, we will combine the rear clamp with efficiency to even better direct the machines.

At a slower pace, the Rocket 3 bring out the charm of their exuberant displacement. On the couple, we taste the pleasure of extra large cruising. The soft hum of the engine highlights a significant comfort. Both the suspensions and the saddle participate in the enjoyment of movement.

There is an important difference between the two versions. The ergonomics of the Rocket 3 GT favor a more relaxed piloting. Its handlebars with longer horns give better leverage, while the legs reasonably straight forward make the back arch more. A completely different atmosphere signs the Roadster version. More regulatory, the induced position gently tilts the pilot on a flatter handlebar. In the axis of the pelvis, the footrests give a more dynamic and natural size. If the support on the handlebars seems less effective, those on the feet are much more effective, placing the Rocket 3 R with precision on its trajectory. Truly different, the two muscular Triumphs ensure the same seduction.

Part-cycle

Completely revised, chassis and suspensions ensure dynamic evolutions of the first order. Neutral, easy and rigid, the Rocket 3 can be taken along without fear and without reproach. Weight gain is a major asset of this development.

Braking

Here again, the lower mass of Triumph hyper cruisers improves deceleration and efficiency in dynamic driving. Combined and monitored by the inertial unit, ABS braking is efficient and enduring.

Comfort / Duo

Another strong point of the Rocket 3, comfort is at the rendezvous with a soft seat. The passenger will be more at the party on the GT and its thicker saddle. Its backsplash is another argument for leaving for two, especially as the more road is ready to receive suitcases.

Consumption

190 km at a high pace, almost running out of fuel, or more than 8.5 liters per 100. The Englishwoman has a thirst for her size. Nothing suprising. At more regulatory paces, count 7.5 liters, or even less. An almost reasonable result given the displacement, weight and exceptional performance of the Rocket 3.

Conclusion

Stylish and efficient mutations, the new Triumph Rocket 3 GT and R are highly seductive hyper cruisers. Their unusual aesthetic and finish coupled with an impressive engine block of style and life make them remarkable mobile sculptures. Lighter, equipped with a rigorous cycle part, they definitely ensure their rank of charming "dragster". Their more widely exploitable and dynamic engine contributes to a general approval of the best.

Priced at € 22,400 for the R version and € 23,200 for the GT version, the Triumph Rocket 3 is not for everyone. Difficult to find fault with. Mechanics, construction and finish explain this high price.
