By finishing 17th in the 14th and last stage of the 2013 Dakar won by the Chilean Francisco "Chaleco" Lopez, the French Cyril Despres (KTM) wins his 5th Dakar and thus joins Cyril Neveu on the winners of the event, one step behind the record by Stephane Peterhansel. Cyril can also be delighted to have brought his water carrier, the Portuguese Ruben Faria, on the second step of the podium for a historic double for the KTM RedBull Rally Factory Team.

Stephane Peterhansel dedicates his victory to JCO

"I have a thought for last week", declared Stephane Peterhansel, winner of the car category at the finish: "he was the one who taught me everything, so the second week was difficult because I I’ve been thinking about it all along. Now I dedicate this victory to him, and we will still try to take advantage of it. A race is never won in advance. The team did a great job. never stopped, never worried about the mechanics. We had only one thing to do, and that was to drive as fast as possible ".

Chaleco, forced to change his engine after losing his 4th gear at the end of the 13th stage, suffered a penalty of 15 minutes which dropped him to third place overall, 8’34 behind Faria, and above all 1 ’30 only ahead of Slovakian Ivan Jakes.

In danger for his podium, the Chilean gave everything in this last stage (126 km timed) to afford his 5th scratch of the rally, 29 ” ahead of Ruben Faria and 37 ” ahead of his rival for the title of best performer, the Spaniard Joan Barreda. But it is indeed the official KTM team which triumphs by placing its two motorcycles in the first two places..

This 5th title for Cyril Despres (2010, 2012 and 2013 in South America and 2005 and 2007 in Africa) now places him on a par with Cyril Neveu. Slovakian Ivan Jakes finished 4th at 23’54, more than 20 ‘ahead of Spaniard Juan Pedrero, 5th.

"It’s true that you have to get on the line, see all these photos, everyone there is here, to know that they will no longer steal it from me, this victory", whispered Despres to the ‘arrival. "I went to look for it, with everything a Dakar has in store for surprises: small navigation errors, maybe a little less than the others, mechanical management and a good team. In the end, there are What to be very happy. The day a Dakar victory will be easy to win, it will lack interest. And it’s not about to happen! It’s too long, it’s too hard, it’s too hot , it’s too cold, you have to wake up early in the morning, you have to get out of the labyrinths of dunes of Peru and Chile, you have to rub with the pebbles and cacti of the slopes of Cordoba … it’s just too complicated to make it easy to win ".
