The American Kurt Caselli, replacing Marc Coma in the official KTM team, won his first stage victory yesterday during the seventh stage of the 2013 Dakar motorcycle. He is ahead of Francisco Lopez (KTM) and Olivier Pain (Yamaha), who retains his first place in the provisional general classification.

The American Kurt Caselli, replacing Marc Coma in the official KTM team, won his first stage victory yesterday at the seventh stage of the. He is ahead of Francisco Lopez (KTM) and Olivier Pain (Yamaha), who retains his first place in the provisional general classification.

With a heavy heart …

This seventh stage began in Chile under the sign of sadness: marked by the tragic disappearance of young Thomas Bourgin, all the competitors approached this day with a heavy heart … (read).

Fairly long (417 km, including 218 km of special), this stage took the bikers to extremely high altitudes (over 3,500 meters), which "skimmed" the peloton. Against all expectations, the defending champion Cyril Despres was not there: the French, victim of gearbox problems (5th recalcitrant), only finished the day in 34th position, 13:08 from the winner.

The KTM official downgrades to fifth place in the provisional general, behind Pain, Lopez, Casteu and his water carrier, Ruben Faria.

Surprisingly at ease on the very fast portion of this 7th stage, his teammate Kurt Caselli (replacing Marc Coma), took the victory in just under two hours. The American (2nd in the 2012 edition of the Baja 1000) signs his first Dakar success just ahead of Francisco Lopez’s KTM and Olivier Pain’s Yamaha. A position that allows the French to keep the lead of the general.

‘Today was not a complicated stage, you just had to follow the track and ride with your hand ", affirms Kurt Caselli." Without off-piste, it’s always easier and I was able to attack. With Ruben, we stopped to help Cyril who was having mechanical problems, but he immediately told us to continue ".

"(…). Winning the special is great for me, but I don’t forget that this is my first Dakar and that I’m here to learn. But in any case I’m having a lot of fun, on the bike as in the bivouac and I will try to continue like this ", says the American.

"Of course, with Cyril‘s worries, I find myself with a significant gap in mind, and that’s good for me", reports Olivier Pain.

"It’s part of the race, but I don’t forget that it can happen to me too, so we’re not going to claim victory, especially since Cyril has the capacity to make up for this lost time …".

Second of this stage, Francisco Lopez gains two places in the provisional general classification and is now in second place, just 6min06 from Olivier Pain.

"It was a special, very, very fast today, without much difficulty and which ended in a sprint from start to finish," said "Chaleco". "For me, everything has been perfect, and I think I’m in a position for tomorrow‘s stage, without having pulled the bike too hard".

David Casteu finished eighth of this day with his YZF and retains the third position overall. The Italian Botturi takes the first Husqvarna to 10th place on the stage, while the first Honda only appears in 16th position (Pizzolito). Alain Duclos and his Sherco are 25th in the special and 36th in the provisional general.
