Dakar - Dakar moto 2015 - stage 11: the Hondas do the show but KTM wins -

Joan Barreda Bort claimed his second consecutive victory (his 4th since the start of the Dakar 2015) ahead of Paulo Goncalves during the 11th stage. A rewarding double for Honda in terms of image, but a little less sporting since the two HRC officials have changed their engine and therefore plunge in the standings.

Joan Barreda Bort offered his (his 4th since the start of) ahead of Paulo Goncalves during the 11th stage. A rewarding double for Honda in terms of image, but a little less sporting since the two HRC officials have changed their engine and therefore plunge in the standings.

Incredibles Coma and KTM ?

523 km long, 298 of which were timed, the 11th stage between Cachi and Termas de Rio Hondo (Argentina) was the second of the "marathon" type, that is to say without technical assistance. The motorcyclists therefore find themselves left to their own devices, forced to carry out routine maintenance operations but also more advanced mechanics in the evening at the bivouac..

In this game, the consistency and timely management of Marc Coma continue to hit the mark: the defending champion has managed to avoid trouble and spare the engine of his official KTM, which is not the case with all his rivals..

Like his last rival, Paulo Goncalves, forced to change the 450 cc of his CRF Rally overnight after it had shown signs of weakness during the previous stage.

Due to the marathon format of the event, Goncalves recovered the engine of one of his teammates, in this case that of Joan Barreda Bort, whose recently changed engine was the "freshest" of the Honda clan. Barreda, for his part, turned to another teammate to continue the race: Jeremias Israel was thus "sacrificed" so that his two leaders could continue the rally….

End of the adventure therefore for Israel, who remained at the bivouac of Cachi to contemplate his Honda amputated of its mechanical "heart" … Hard, but it is the role – sometimes thankless – of water carrier … Leaving with less tried and tested mechanics than those of their opponents, Barreda and Goncalves were able to send big gas without worrying about wear and tear and almost won the 11th stage wheel to wheel..

Thanks to this double, Goncalves took 2’23 from Marc Coma, who had chosen to "push" his engine to avoid having to trade it for a block from one of his teammates during the marathon stage..

The reason for this strategy is simple: if necessary, Coma will be able to change engines, benefiting from all the assistance of his team to face the last two stages. In addition, the titleholder avoids the penalty received for each engine change.

Because if Barreda and Goncalves are the first to cross the finish line, they only appear at 40th and 22nd positions respectively in the stage classification because of the penalties suffered for their engine change (45 minutes for Barrada who changed blocks twice, 15 for Goncalves because it is his first change).

"Because of the penalty, I give 15 minutes for free to all my opponents. But it is the rule of the race and it applies to everyone", explains Goncalves who openly crosses his fingers that Coma in turn knows this situation !

"With 7 minutes late it was already difficult, even if I recovered about two minutes on the pitch today," he admits. "Now it is even more difficult. But the problem I had yesterday, others can also suffer. So it is not too late to hope to finish in the best position".

Coma therefore remains a solid leader in the overall standings, but will still have to “round back” during the next two stages, especially if he decides to finish with the same engine on his KTM.

As there are still 1,500 km to go (1,024 km including 298 km of special today and 393 km including 174 km of special on Saturday), this risky strategy seems unlikely, however, d” as much as Coma can drop ballast since he now has a 21-minute lead in the provisional !

"There is still a complicated day tomorrow, then again the last day of Saturday. I do not see the end yet. We will see because there is still a lot of mileage. But for now I’m happy", admits Coma, without revealing more about his intentions…

Once the penalties of Barreda and Goncalves integrated into the standings, it is Ivan Jakes, third behind the Honda boys, who was logically declared the winner of this 11th stage..

This is the best result obtained by the Slovak rider, who wins ahead of Ruben Faria and Toby Price.

The Australian beginner also benefits from a Pablo Quintanilla very weakened by altitude sickness (to gain nearly two minutes and climb to the provisional podium in the general.

Helder Rodrigues and Stefan Svitko finished in 6th and 7th places on the stage, while Olivier Pain ranked first French driver, finishing 10th at 6’11. The Yamaha rider finished just ahead of David Casteu, best representative of the French team in the provisional with his KTM (7th at 1h46’51) ahead of the Spanish Laia Sanz.
