Double strategy

Derbi is Spain’s oldest two-wheeler manufacturer ?? and, 85 years after it was founded, one of the most creative in Europe. After the spectacular Mulhacen 659 and the exciting GP1 50/125/250 sports scooter, the developers headed by Klaus Nennewitz have now conjured up a four-valve 125cc model with 15 hp and six-speed gearbox that powers two new models: the Soft- Enduro Terra 125 and the sporty Mulhacen 125, which skilfully takes up design elements of the 659. The trick: with the same engine and largely identical chassis, two 125 cc models were created with completely different designs and completely different characters.

M.ith its upright, relaxed seating position, a good overview behind a wide handlebar and, at higher speeds, wind protection that can be felt thanks to the small cockpit cladding, the Terra is recommended as a practical all-rounder for every day. In its soft, clearly stepped saddle, people up to 1.85 meters and a passenger feel comfortable. The single cylinder always hangs neatly on the gas and runs very quietly, so it doesn’t matter that it needs speeds of over 4000 rpm to start up. From 6000 tours it goes well, the four-valve engine turns willingly up to over 10,000 rpm. The smooth gearshift zaps quickly through the six gears. Vibrations are barely noticeable and never annoying.

The Terra is playful and extremely handy, has a small turning circle and steers neutrally. The driving precision is okay? especially when measured against the fact that the chassis is comfortably tuned and swallows up pretty much all bumps. The Terra brakes well too? gentle in the beginning and heavy when needed, but dips deeply at the front because of the long-stroke, softly tuned fork.
