Driving report Harley-Davidson XR 1200 X (2009)

The most European Harley

For a handful of dollars more, the most European Harley becomes the even more European XR 1200X. Thanks to the new chassis.

E.The Harley dealers in the old world demanded a real European. Milwaukee was able to deliver in 2008: The XR 1200 came exclusively to the European showrooms. The roadster has that certain lightness and sporty touch that hardly anyone on the other side of the pond cares about – thought the Harley executives. But the US dealers put pressure on so that the XR 1200 is now also available in America. You should definitely do it again, because Harley is upping the ante in 2010 with the XR 1200, and that makes a lot of sense. As critical as the Europeans are, they quickly found the weak point: the chassis.

This is exactly where the new XR 1200X comes in. On the engine side, completely identical to the standard XR and only visually differentiated from the basic model due to the consistently black paintwork, the X variant now has a fully adjustable fork and two fully adjustable duo shocks. And indeed, the 1000 euros extra charge is worth it. This fork wears out the notch left by a much too soft standard fork with the poorly metered, but wildly gripping brake. Paired with the suspension struts, the XR 1200X can be tuned in such a way that even the slight lean angle does not immediately lead to uncontrollable bumps with every heavy bump. This is particularly noticeable around the right, where the X does not offer a millimeter more ground clearance to the low-hanging exhaust pipes.

The new fork works on the big piston principle like the Kawasaki ZX-10R.

The XR with the new chassis is not a nimble weasel either. It needs clear announcements and requires a leading hand. But compared to other Harleys, the difference is huge. Even braking attacks of the robust kind are possible with the X. With a slightly more pretensioned fork and a few clicks more pressure level, this no longer works and harmonizes much better with the revised, more finely adjustable brake. Only the responsiveness is not the very best. The X-Fan has to accept compromises in terms of comfort. The same applies to the suspension struts: if the surface is too fluted or warped, the XR 1200X shakes its rider quite a bit. For this she rewards him with a 91-hp twin that delivers plenty of punch from the middle, a relaxed seating position and a chassis that likes it a lot on well-kept country roads. Sporty cruising – the European way of life.
