Driving report: Kawasaki Z 750 R

Green, what else? So it should be for a sporty Kawasaki. But whether green or black, the Z 750 is an evergreen anyway. And with the current update in the form of the upgraded R model, Kawasaki heralds a further evolutionary stage.

The roots of the Kawasaki Z 750 go back to the 1970s, when the three-quarter liter four-cylinder naturally still had cooling fins and was ventilated through a carburetor and two valves. This air-cooled engine made its last appearance from 2001 to 2003 in the ZR-7. In 2004 the first modern Z 750 entered the stage, powered by a water-cooled four-valve engine. In 2007 the street fighter was dressed in new clothes. From 2004 to the present day, around 125,000 copies found fans in Europe alone, almost 11200 of them in Germany.

Driving report: Kawasaki Z 750 R

The Z 750 R is not a new development, but an evolutionary stage of the previous machine, which will remain in the range as an entry-level model for the time being. Identifying new and old is somewhat reminiscent of the picture puzzle from the Horzu: Find the ten differences. Let’s start from the beginning: the fenders and the now radially screwed-on brake calipers, which are operated by a radial pump, are new. The lower jaw of the Darth Vader handlebar mask is much more pronounced, the instruments behind it show the speed in white on black instead of black on white. The fork and shock absorber were taken from the 2009 Z 1000 model, as was the filigree aluminum swing arm, which replaces the rustic square steel tube work.

The unchanged engine is now wrapped in black, and the rocker arm has been modified for better response. Last but not least, the indicators shrank and got fashionable clear glass. In addition, the series tires have been changed, namely Dunlop D 210 instead of the qualifier.

This is how birds see the Zett: wide tank, command post thanks to slim waist, spartan pillion seat.

Hands and feet find their intended counterparts straight away. The seat height increased by two to 83.5 centimeters, the seating position is active, but not too front-wheel oriented. During a cold start, the foursome can be asked a little before it starts working with that typical, slightly snotty sound. For the first few meters, the R is a bit stony and wobbly. But that goes away quickly when a bit of temperature gets into the rubbers. She then follows the given course lightly and precisely and lays lively from one lean angle to the other. What does not go away is the righting moment when braking in curves. And that despite the fact that the ABS version’s stoppers are rather tame.

A specimen that was driven without ABS for comparison was much more snappy in this discipline. In an emergency, the ABS itself regulates sensitively and without great pulsation in the hand lever. In terms of the engine, nothing has changed. In the lowest speed range, the four-in-line is cultivated, but quite powerless. For cruising, the speed should exceed 4000 / min. The real fun area begins at 6000 revs, then the four-cylinder really bites. With the power come the typical fine four-cylinder vibrations, which are particularly noticeable in footrests and handlebars. The sound changes from throaty babbling to angry roar, which a rev limiter resolutely puts a stop to at around 12500 rpm. The six gear wheel pairs can be shifted exactly, only sometimes behave a bit bony when downshifting.

The chassis, which can be adjusted in spring preload and rebound damping at the front and rear, does justice to sporty demands. Suspension and damping offer more reserves than before, without sacrificing the necessary comfort. Since the price remains within a reasonable range of 8,995 euros, nothing should stand in the way of the success story continuing.
