Steam roller at speed

Kawasaki makes the ZZR 1400 fit for the future. The lightning-fast speed bike receives an update and now meets the Euro 4 standard. Does it have less steam as a result, or does it continue to roll everything down?

It flashes on the left. Ever since the Audi appeared in the rearview mirror of the Kawasaki ZZR 1400 Performance Sport, it has been flashing on the left. Typical freeway complainer. But here is 100 and the right lane is full. The flasher does not change anything. Do the pee have to? Or urgently for a big business meeting? No matter. The end of the construction site is already in sight, now let’s see how urgent he really is. Quilted down three gears, moistened lips, pushed backside, head tucked behind the windshield, right hand ready to cock: full throttle. The Kawasaki ZZR 1400 sucks in cubic meters of air into its airbox and shoots you into orbit like a rocket from the 1.4-liter engine with powerful turbine pressure. The needle shoots to 10,000 revolutions, here the four-cylinder catapults man and machine into a new galaxy.

Noble, better, cleaner

The most spectacular thing about it: how unspectacular high-speed feels on this device. The bike lies like a board. The Kawasaki ZZR 1400 has been in the range in this guise since 2012. The Japanese are now giving the better-equipped Performance Sport Edition (from model year 2014) an update. It should be even more elegant and better – and also cleaner. Because as small as the modifications may seem: The ZZR 1400 is now fit for the future. Thanks to the increased volume of the catalytic converter, fuel vapor retention system and revised control unit, it meets the Euro 4 standard. Has this made the performance worse? Let’s see.

Chassis: great!

What you can tell are the changes to the seating position on the Kawasaki ZZR 1400 Performance Sport. It is not known exactly for which stature this body part arrangement was designed, but certainly not for Central Europeans. Whether the driver is 178 or 185 centimeters tall: the legs bend unnaturally. The pegs are a bit higher, as usual for athletes, but not further back. This may relax the knee angle, but leads to a peculiar sitting posture that is otherwise only known from going to the toilet. The upper body, on the other hand, leans forward in a pleasantly sporty manner, the hands grip the stub handlebars that are not too low. The weight on the wrists is low. OK then.

The great chassis, which irones roads smoothly better than Grandma’s fine rib undershirts, is another delight. The Ohlins TTX39 shock absorber built into the Performance Sport Edition of the Kawasaki ZZR 1400 swallows everything that is served to it. Very controlled, well muffled and with a fine response. An excellent choice that gives the bike even more stability without sacrificing everyday practicality. Quite the opposite: Finally, the spring preload can be easily adjusted hydraulically using a handwheel.

Brake like a pig …

Like the Supersport sister ZX-10 and the compressor bike H2R, the Kawasaki ZZR 1400 Performance Sport has two radially mounted M50 monoblock brake calipers at the front, which are connected to the brake pump by a steel braided brake line. If the deceleration performance was already at a high level, the new one now brakes like a pig. The good thing: the dosability has not suffered. The braking effect also increases in line with the lever actuation, without requiring much force. Two fingers are enough to capture the 269 kilograms. However, despite the Brembo system, you should not choose your braking point too late. In case of doubt, the sheer mass pushes you relentlessly to the outer edge of the curve. Apart from that, you can of course still brake cheekily into the curve. That actually makes you in a good mood. Because the Bridgestone S20 tires not only provide excellent grip and clear feedback, but also little setup moment. The whole thing is very harmonious.

Just like the creamy and hardly vibrating motor, which has only lost its top performance within the scope of the measurement tolerance. Contrary to what the performance diagram suggests, the four-cylinder, as before, cautiously goes to action up to around 3800 rpm, from then on with all the more power and with the help of the three-stage traction control. The handling and steering behavior of the fat hum is surprising. Once you have left the speed of the restricted traffic area, the 1400 listens faithfully to every instruction. Over the entire lean angle, it falls neutrally and precisely into the lean position, and can be quickly turned around in alternating curves with dedicated pressure on the handlebars. Sure, more would be possible with a narrower rear tire than the fitted 190. But even so, the Kawasaki ZZR 1400 Performance Sport convinces with good manners in everyday life.

Only Kawasaki ZZR 1400 Performance Sport

This also applies to the six-speed transmission, whose gear position sensor now switches without contact. All gears lock cleanly and precisely. The Akrapovic titanium rear silencers meanwhile put on thick pants when driving and screech the power of the engine loudly into the wide world even at low speeds. Sounds cool, but the neighbor thinks it’s rather stupid. You have to want that. In the end, there is still the price: From this year the Kawasaki ZZR 1400 is only available in the Performance Sport Edition. It costs an impressive 19,145 euros. A steamroller at speed has its price. But the update lives up to its name and the Kawa has retained its performance despite compliance with the Euro 4 standard. That has class.
