R-freshening

Peter Gorbach, Head of Four-Stroke Engine Development at KTM, doesn’t ignore it for long: ?? We looked at the previous engine and thought about what we want to change? and then ultimately developed a completely new enduro engine. ?? Four-stroke enduro bikes were and are the core business of the Austrians. Over 20,000 units of this type leave the Mattighofen plant every year. In the case of the 2008 generation of models, not even the name remained the same. The previous addition ?? Racing ?? turned to a simple but dominant ?? R ?? reduced. Above all, the compact cylinder head with a camshaft and service-friendly cylinder cover with an inclined sealing surface distinguishes the new development from the double-cam engines from KTM that have been used in motocross for two years. The less pronounced freedom of rotation of the ohc concept does not play a decisive role in enduro sports, but the simpler technology and the smaller installation dimensions do.

Enduro-typical drivability, i.e. smooth, easy-to-control engine characteristics, should also bring about the other changes: a six-speed transmission with a short first and second gear ratio, modified timing, four millimeter larger titanium intake valves, lower compression and a crankshaft with a larger flywheel. The new engine also has a vibration-dampening balance shaft.

Even the first few meters bring a clear surprise. The nervousness and wobble typical of KTM enduros has been reduced, and the front wheel provides a much safer driving experience. A character change that the KTM engineers have already instilled in the current motocross models. By means of a complex interplay of many different things. For example, the now steeper cylinder, the frame that has been shortened by one centimeter behind the steering head and the less stiff swing arm are supposed to be the reasons for this. Two horsepower higher peak performance and improved processing quality promises KTM as a treat on top. In fact, the single-cylinder pushes forward as brawny as a tractor and calmly, in the spirit of an enduro, and impresses with its six-speed gearbox, which is easy to shift.

Of course, KTM is working in parallel on a version with petrol injection in order to meet the stricter noise and exhaust gas regulations in the future, but for the time being it will remain with a flat slide carburetor with a diameter of 39 millimeters. In addition to the popular 450 version, the new Enduro is also available as the 530 EXC-R with a displacement of 510 cubic centimeters for the open-displacement class.
