When a machine is a success, the manufacturers are used to declining it in several versions. Think of the Monster: appeared in 900 cm3, its success was such that an imposing family was born from it. La Multistrada appears for 2005 in version 620 so that a greater number can discover its talents of a new kind.
Apart from a few details, it is visually impossible to differentiate the 620 from the 1000. The only way to recognize them: the swingarm. On the small one, it is a classic model instead of the single-sided arm that equips its big sister. When we detail the technical sheet, we see more clearly. As the Ducati’s twin is less powerful, the elements that make up the bike have adapted. The fork is no longer a Showa but a Marzocchi (of the same diameter), the brake discs are smaller as well as the rear tire. The Sachs rear shock replaces the Showa element. The tank goes from 20 to 15 L; as the small twin consumes less, autonomy should be maintained at a reasonable level. The essential remains: the 620 Multistrada is a copy of the 1000, fuselage pots with the head of fork so singular. Impossible not to have fun with a machine like this. You still have to appreciate a typical Ducati comfort..
Over time, the Ducati family has grown considerably and is becoming more and more accessible. 15 years ago, Ducat ‘, they were sportswomen and that’s all.
Today, the 620 Multistrada represents the most accessible motorcycle of the Italian manufacturer, the latest in a long and thoughtful (and also somewhat American marketing) expansion of its customer base. Easy to learn, the Bologna trail would be almost worthy of the accessibility of Japanese motorcycles but it retains these small imperfections which will make some angry or delight those who defend machines “endearing by their faults”. The saddle already, high and whose design would benefit from being widened from the front. The mirrors are moderately effective, it shines badly (like all Ducati), it’s not especially given … In short, everything you need for this little Italian machine to be very different from a bland Japanese basic.
Apart from this surprising ease for a Ducat ‘, there is also the twin 620 which calls out to us. Not particularly powerful but quite flexible and punchy in the mid-range. The Multi being around 200 kgs, the engine is enough to have fun and you can release your horses with less apprehension than on the 1000, more “fiery”.
As the 620 must weigh about twenty kilos less than the thousand DS, the Multi behaves as efficiently as it is pleasing. It is in a way the alliance of a Freewind and a Monster. The comfort is average, the braking quality and the design noticed.
Like its big sister, the 620 Multistrada lends itself to many exercises. His name was not chosen at random. Half-trail, half-roadster, half-road and a bit sporty, this charming motorcycle could well change your mind about Ducatis….
