It seems like a good idea, even an excellent one, to decline the Scrambler in a 400cc version. Because for some, an 800 may seem a little too strong in displacement to discover the world of motorcycles. Have fun with a Ducat ‘of medium cubage, the idea pleases. Especially since the Scrambler already has a strong attracting power and a side of sympathy at the top. We say to ourselves that if we could have a “little Srambler” to hang around here and there, cheaper and with the same face, we would be more than tempted. But, and we will come back to this at the end, the price does not tend towards this philosophy.
No need to discuss vitam aeternam on the design of this beach-bike. A real treat that smacks of fun, holidays, the beach and the surfboard. So, let’s see what changes on this declination of 399 cm3. The displacement of course, with lower stroke and bore values. The essential remains: an air-cooled desmo twin. In operation, the engine loses almost half of its power but retains 41 horsepower and 3.9 mkg. Suddenly, we forget the playful rolls to focus on simple walks and especially accessible to the A2 license.
To make it more affordable, Ducati has also reduced the quality of the peripherals. The inverted fork is replaced by a classic 41mm model without adjustment. We turn the radial caliper with 4 pistons for an axial with 2 pistons. The aluminum plates disappear from the tank, the latter is a bit more generous in capacity. The swing arm here is made of steel. Round mirrors are more basic. The rear wheel is narrower, shod with a 160 tire instead of the 180 of the other Scramblers in the range. However, ABS is still standard, as is the headlight with its specific charm and LED crown, the trellis frame, the cut-and-paste design of the 800 and the Ducati logo..
By the way, why this Sixty2 appendix rigged up to this 400? To recall the year 1962 when the brand’s first Scrambler was marketed.
The 400 Scrambler suffers the savings. We expected that, the machine and its more “djeun” colors wanting to be more accessible for the younger generation. On the other hand, the price is simply outrageous. It costs only 600 euros less than the Icon, much better equipped and motorized. Even if the machine throws a max, it makes the parade expensive; especially to provide the same services in the same spirit as a Mash 400 displayed 40% cheaper.
