The opening of the MotoGP season in the Netherlands compromised by the coronavirus

The Dutch Motorcycle Grand Prix, which was to launch the MotoGP season on June 28 following multiple cancellations and postponements linked to Covid-19, is called into question by the decision of the Dutch government to ban public gatherings until the 1st September. Explanations.

"Public gatherings will be prohibited until September 1: we are therefore extending this decision by three months, from June 1 to September 1," the Prime Minister of the Netherlands, Mark Rutte, said yesterday Tuesday, explaining that authorizing the "holding events would create a real risk of the rapid spread of the coronavirus".

"This decision is taken so as not to take any risks over the next three months and because we want to respond to the organizers’ need for clarity. If this extension bothers fans of the round ball, it also impacts – and above all – the motorcycle Grand Prix calendar: after the postponement of the German GP decided on, the Netherlands should in theory host the opening of the 26 to June 28 in Assen.

Start of the season postponed – for now – to July 12…

In short: the chances that the 2020 championship starts at the end of June are at this stage seriously compromised, or even completely zero. The kick-off is therefore postponed to the next race scheduled on the new Kymiring circuit in Finland on … July 12! Four months later than the opening date initially scheduled in early March in Qatar !

With this new postponement to come, the MotoGP season seems seriously threatened: the GP of the Netherlands is the ninth event on the calendar to be moved, out of a total of 20 initially planned. Rescheduling all these races for the summer-fall period seems to be a challenge, even by extending the season until December…

This measure announced by Mark Rutte also affects the World Superbike Championship, whose Dutch heats had been moved from April to August in reaction to the coronavirus.
