In an accident often decide minutes about life or death. If a system automatically triggers the emergency call after the crash and sends the GPS coordinates of the scene of the accident, can bring the decisive time advantage. From 2017, BMW offers such a system for motorcycles.

BMW offers E-Call from 2017 as special equipment for motorcycles. The automatic emergency call, which is standard with many new cars, recognizes sensors when an accident happens and alerted self-employed rescue workers. In an emergency, so very fast help should be realized.

For example, a crash sensor recognizes a collision with another vehicle or impact on an obstacle. A slant sensor determines the location in which the motorcycle is located. According to BMW, the system is so sophisticated that in situations without an emergency character – a decayer in the stand, sole accidents with a low output speed, a shock by potholes or rides in the field – does not automatically trigger.

Position data are sent

In an accident, the E-Call sends the position data and thus the coordinates of the scene of the accident and activates the rescue chain via the BMW Call Center. There are three scenarios: a serious fall or impact in which the emergency call is automatically activated automatically and without delay. This is displayed in the instrument cluster, it also sounds an acoustic signal. A termination of the emergency call by the driver is no longer possible in the case. The call center produces a telephone connection to the motorcycle, for which are integrated in the control unit on the right handlebar half microphone and speakers. Regardless of whether the motorcyclist is still responsive and answers, help will be sent in any case.

The second scenario includes a slight fall or impact, the emergency call is active only after 25 seconds and sends a message to the call center. If no help is required for a light accident, the person concerned has the opportunity to cancel the emergency call by pressing a button. If he does not do so, the rescue chain is activated. In addition, in a third scenario, the driver can activate the emergency call manually by pressing the SOS button on the right handlebar end.

Too many false alarms

While e-call is already widely used for cars and is mandatory from 2018 for new cars, the automated emergency call for motorcycles is still something new. A system of the helmet manufacturer Schuberth offered for retrofitting was taken back from the market in 2014, apparently it had come to frequent false alarms.
