The best super athletes of the last 30 years

Who built the hottest sports bikes in the last 30 years? Our readers voted. Here is the official bottom line.

Honda VFR 750 R (RC30), D.ucati 916, BMW S 1000 RR. You didn’t have to be a prophet to predict the outcome of the best super athlete poll since 1983. Long before the polling stations closed, there was a clear trend in the front seats. For a week the readers of www.motorradonline.de were asked to cast their vote.

The best super athletes of the last 30 years

MV Agusta F4 falls by the wayside

Almost 29 percent opted for the Honda VFR 750 R (RC 30) in the first block, the golden era of the legendary superbikes (1983 to 1992). It outclassed the field of pursuers: Ducati’s 851/888 series (12.6 percent) followed with a huge 16 points behind in second place. This in turn was only able to stand out from Suzuki’s original version of the modern super sports car, the GSX-R 750 (11.9 percent). Their gap to fourth place is, in turn, decent: 7.5 percent for the striking vacuum cleaner hoses of the Kawasaki ZXR 750.

On the journey to the modern age of sports bikes (1993 to 2002), the Ducati 916, the Hondas Fireblade, Yamaha’s R1 and the MV Agusta F4 wrestled for positions two and three – the latter ultimately fell by the wayside. The clear winner in the new millennium (2003 to 2012): of course the Bavarian surprise coup from 2009, the S 1000 RR, ahead of the answers from Bologna (Panigale) and Mattighofen (RC 8).
