Electric racing motorcycle for the World Cup

In 2019, the FIM will launch a racing series with electric motorcycles for the first time. We took a closer look at the Energica Ego Corsa standard racing motorcycle for the MotoE series.

In automobile racing, Formula E has already established itself with purely electrically powered formula cars. For 2019, the highest motorcycle sport authority FIM wants to establish a similar model in two-wheel sports. The series is called MotoE and comes with electric bikes from the Italian manufacturer Energica hazards.

160 hp and a top speed of 270 km / h

The racing motorcycle named Energica Ego Corsa MotoE is based on the production bike Energica Ego, but has been further developed for racing. The electric motor has an output of up to 120 kW, which equates to around 160 hp and thus roughly the level of performance of the Moto2 racing machines. The maximum torque of 200 Nm, which is available from standstill up to around 5,000 rpm, on the other hand, clearly exceeds that of the combustion engine models. There is no transmission or clutch. The FIM specifies a top speed of 270 km / h for the Energica Ego Corsa MotoE. The sprint time should be just under 3 seconds. The capacity of the lithium-ion battery is given as 20 kWh. The bikes are recharged via mobile charging stations, which in turn are fed from solar energy. Every motorcycle has a charging station. The electric blankets are also operated via the mobile unit.

Chassis largely standard

For the chassis, the Energica Ego Corsa MotoE relies on a steel tubular space frame. An Ohlins upside-down fork leads at the front, and an aluminum swing arm is installed at the rear, which is supported on the right-hand handlebar via an Ohlins shock absorber directly on the frame. The brake components come from Brembo (330 mm discs and radially tapered four-piston calipers at the front, 240 mm disc with two-piston calipers at the rear). The aluminum wheels come from Marchesini. The fairing of the series Ego was extended for racing use. It goes without saying that the racing bike does not have any lighting equipment.

The motorcycles provided by Energica Motor for the Cup will all be identical. Only the suspension springs can be adjusted by each team for the respective driver. Michelin acts as the exclusive tire supplier. The series sponsor is the energy company Enel. The MotoE races are held as part of five selected MotoGP races in Europe and each run over 10 laps. The races will be around 15 minutes long. The field will consist of 18 drivers who start for twelve different teams. Progress in the development of the battery should not result in longer races, but should be fully added to the performance of the machines.
