5,000 km test

Before, there were road helmets, sports helmets and cross country helmets. There are now enduro touring helmets, to reconcile comfort and outings off the bitumen. This is the case of the last full AGV AX9 Carbon unveiled at the end of 2019 and arrived on the market in 2019..

This full face is in fact offered in two versions: the first with a fiber shell (glass, carbon and aramid) and the second with a carbon fiber construction only which allows the weight of the helmet to be reduced by almost a hundred. grams to officially reach 1.365 g.

Discovery

With its assertive style, the AGV AX9 hybrid road / offroad helmet is designed to combine efficiency and comfort. And indeed, light, versatile and particularly well ventilated, it lends itself easily to offroad use. 5,000 km test.

This new hybrid AGV model, road / offroad with its removable screen, replaces the AX-8 Dual, in the catalog since 2011. It changes very little. The helmet retains its assertive design, quite futuristic, its strength evoking a certain dark side…. does he still have the strength with him ?

In its Matt Carbon livery, the AX9 mitigates (a little) its presence by the elegance of its finish. Its 2D visor (flat face) with bold cutouts allows the use of a Pinlock anti-fog lens provided. Visually, the helmet borrows from the two worlds it wishes to cover. The strong and high chin bar joins the sporty forms of the top with ribbing. The whole then forms the back of the flat flats to the base of the helmet.

The shell of our test model is made of carbon. The other versions offer a mixed tri-composite construction: carbon, aramid and fiberglass. This technique makes it possible to produce a helmet of 1445 grams in size M / 58, a weight which for the carbon version goes down to 1.360 gr, the model of our test (verified weight). No internal retractable sunscreen. The removable contoured cap will be your only sun visor. Fixed by 4 screws, it is rather easily disassembled. Provide a 20 cent coin or a screwdriver. Without this appendage, the helmet offers an even more dynamic look that will not mismatch on a roadster. Sober, the matte finish of this model is flawless, but beware of shocks: scratches and impacts will be seen quickly.

The AGV AX9 gives you air. Two vents at its top meet the 2 rear mesh extractors. The main device is found on the chin bar. Oversized, the opening is barred with a sliding slider grid. Retractable for cleaning, it reveals the presence of a foam filter. Very useful for the offroad…. And, from the inside, you will also order the opening of a second internal perforated plate, also removable. In the closed position, the latter allows the flow to be directed more on the screen. By removing the set, you will not run out of air ….

The base of the helmet reveals a solid, extractable, contoured anti-stir bib, extending the interior cushions. "Shalimar" fabrics and synthetic nubuck dress the base of these elements which benefits from a treatment to resist water. We would have liked the nubuck area to be larger in order to facilitate maintenance and drying. In particular the impregnation of water from below. A common phenomenon when driving very wet on a motorway in the water fog of traffic. Large and padded, the tabs of the double-D buckle chinstrap finalize the comfort aspect. Finally, the AX9 is ready to receive a communication system.

Threading

The AX9 has 3 shell sizes in which a 4-density expanded polystyrene (EPS) shell (4 sizes) takes place. The set covers sizes XS to XXXL. On the cheeks, the cushions receive a fresh and fluid "Ritmo" interior fabric. The other elements are dressed in "Shalimar", more dense. The set, treated anti-bacterial, is washable and removable.

The fitting gives a feeling of "tailor-made" Italian style, very comfortable. Light, the helmet seems to float. Besides, it’s not just an image; size M has two values, 58/59 and the first is mine…. With my face quite narrow, I would have liked more foam on the cheeks.

Apart from this point, the Italian helmet is most pleasant. No pressure zone is sensitive and the impression of space is important. Refined towards the temples, the lateral supports are designed to let the temples of glasses slip. Mine do not pass. Really not, two-thirds blocked by the foams. Pity.

Dynamic test

Practical, two pins allow the screen to be lifted, either to the left or to the right. But only on three levels! Because the cap imposes a maximum height, even when removed. This, in the high position, leaves the angular cutouts of the visor in the field of vision. Not necessarily pleasant. Closed, the seal is excellent and just as important, the reopening is intuitive. You can leave a trickle of air while avoiding complete closure. And on the first level of opening, the vision is good and the air flow very bearable. Also, the screen tilt is remarkable in its operation, ensuring smooth and precise movement. Finally, purists can remove this ocular windshield and use a cross-type mask..

In urban development, we appreciate the efficiency of air intakes, but less their reduced accessibility. Again, the cap hinders access. Withdrawn, the maneuver is then simpler. More pleasant, the wide eye relief allows very good side vision.

The AGV AX9 delivers correct soundproofing and driving without earplugs on departmental and medium distances is quite possible. As with any helmet of this type, the cap, again, can pull on the neck at good speed. Be careful not to turn your head too much.

In offroad use, the lightness and good ventilation of the helmet make it an appreciable ally. On dusty tracks, we appreciate the foam filter to limit particles. And the screen also provides an effective barrier by leaving a wide field of vision. Be careful when crossing any fords: make sure you have lowered the visor. Otherwise, cold and muddy water makes a good spa ….

Visor disassembly / assembly

Faced with the many systems developed to remove its visor without tools, here, the screw screen fixing system necessarily requires a tool. Be careful not to lose all this hardware.

Conclusion

Lightweight, comfortable and versatile, the AGV AX9 provides first-class performance for a helmet of this type. Its high-end construction makes it a very beautiful object. Its fully removable and cleanable chin bar ventilation system is a real plus in offroad use.

In plain color (or mono), the Italian helmet charges € 459.95 and € 499.95 in multi-color. Our copy Mat Carbon claims 599.95 €. High prices in relation to the quality of manufacture and design which fortunately fall under the bar of 400 euros on the internet for the base model and 460 euros for the carbon mat, which makes it almost a good deal.
