Make a wish

No matter whether carbon, chrome or magnesium, no matter whether clutch cover or fuel filler cap? In the meantime, everything a customer’s heart desires in terms of additional equipment can be found in the manufacturers’ parts shelves. A journey through the colorful accessory wonderland.

Stefan Kaschel

08/13/2008

At Harley, the magic word can – quite clearly – only be chrome. At KTM and Ducati everything revolves around carbon (fiber). But light metal of high quality is also popular. Even at BMW, whose comfort concept in the past bore rather heavy weight (accessory) blossoms, the carbon fiber mat is now just as an integral part of the range as the seat heating. There is hardly a gap left in the range, especially from European manufacturers, so that the customer can make the beloved item even more personal. Or even more functional. In any case, however, more desirable. And of course more expensive.

The best example of this is – as was to be expected – Harley-Davidson. The guys from Milwaukee, just as pioneers in the field of the lucrative after-sale market as the Bavarians (see interviews), meanwhile even save the need for a telephone book-thick accessory catalog with a specially set up series. A factory customization, so to speak, as paradoxical as that sounds. With the Screamin ’Eagle Softail Springer, for example – insiders speak of the FXSTSSE2, of course – a dream finished in paint and chrome rolls off the assembly line of the CVO (Custom Vehicle Operations) department, with hardly a screw in its thread compared to the series. Nevertheless, the individuality is in good order. To ensure that custom remains custom ex works, Harley has set two hurdles for the continued distribution of the Softail Springer. One is the purchase price of 28,890 euros, the other the limited edition (in the 2008 model year, a total of just over 1000 CVO Harleys from four different series came to Europe).

Harley-Davidson Screamin ‘Eagle Softail Springer

Factory tuning

fact

“Bling bling”-Effects make your eyes sparkle: Harley-Davidson Screamin ‘Eagle Softail Springer in a special color “Inferno Orange” painted.

Many CVO Softail jumpers are therefore guaranteed not to be on the road. But even without this certainty, the first turn of the crankshaft is immediately there, that uplifting feeling of sitting on something very special. Not because of the 110 cubic inch rate, which lifts the displacement from 1584 to 1802 cubic centimeters and gives the CVO offspring three more horsepower, but also a significantly more wavy performance curve. Rather, it’s this blinking and flashing at every corner, it’s details like the missing cables on the control units (laid inside the handlebars) or the brushed aluminum of the speedometer and rev counter. It is the tank display in the mirrored tank cap that is only visible when the ignition is activated. And of course it’s the color. “Inferno Orange with Fireburst Flames”, wherever the eye looks. This paint kit is only available on the CVO Softail Springer. High quality, with the finest structures and transitions, it is neither available for money nor for good words on other models. It ennobles the Softail Springer as well as the surprisingly neutral driving behavior despite the wide tires (130/70 and 200/55), the fine throttle response of the mighty V2 and its elegant restraint when it comes to mechanical expressions of life.

Ducati Hypermotard 1100 S.

Factory tuning

Fact

For the Hypermotard, the Italians offer lots of carbon parts that not only make the curve whistler look delicious, but also save weight.

A Ducati has always been miles away from that. Of course also the noble version of the Hypermotard, the 1100 S, whose carbon clutch cover is neither serious about covering nor about noise insulation and allows a clear view of the rattling, rotating disks of the dry clutch.

This minimalism continues wherever the expensive miracle material replaces plain plastic and the Hypermotard brings in a weight saving of two kilograms (194 to 196 kilograms) compared to the standard version. Not worth mentioning, do you mean? Judging by the extras that are already possible ex works, actually not. If you consider the “S” as the first stage of factory tuning, it is above all the Ohlins shock absorber, the attractive, carbon-coated fork, the forged wheels and the brutally biting one-piece Brembo brake calipers that make the biggest difference to the normal Hypermotard and with it Add an additional price of EUR 2,000 (EUR 11,500 to EUR 13,500). It can, however, be increased further without difficulty. With the Termignoni exhaust system for around 1981 euros, for example, or the rotary steering damper from Ohlins for 823 euros. If you then choose an all-round carefree carbon package, the bottom line is quickly 5000 euros or more. So it’s no wonder that Ducati now has 30 percent of sales in the area “Motorcycle related products” generated with technical accessories. In relation to the 2007 financial year, this means a sum of over 600 euros per motorcycle sold.

BMW R 1200 GS

Factory tuning

fact

When buying a new BMW customer can configure his machine with special equipment, something that no other manufacturer offers.

At BMW, this can traditionally be slightly higher. Anyone who takes the trouble to do all sorts of additional items (over 60) for one R 1200 GS Adding it to the base price of 12,500 euros, sees the not inconsiderable sum of 21,871.74 euros on paper. Presumably, a 1200 GS with such an over-the-top equipment would appear to normal Central Europeans like an American Christmas tree in the spruce tree. And yet: Even if a GS, like the MOTORRAD test machine, is not exactly overloaded, 2788 euros (see list on page 39) only come together for accessories. Functional special equipment such as partially integral ABS (1080 euros), the ESA chassis that can be adjusted at the push of a button (680 euros) or the smart on-board computer (145 euros) are just as little charged as the stability control ASC (285 euros), suitcases with holders (715 euros) or heated grips (195 euros). All in all, the BMW presented here costs a good 18,000 euros, but does not drive any differently than other GS test machines usually do. That is to say, very good.

KTM 1190 RC8

Factory tuning

Fact

PowerParts is what KTM calls the noble hardware with which ordinary series machines can be converted into real eye-catchers.

From one KTM RC8 in full carbon regalia can be expected more in terms of driving dynamics compared to the standard version, because the obligatory step on the scales reveals something that no one expected. The posh, glossy black factory accessories, in combination with the neatly crafted sports exhaust (without TuV) and the omission of the passenger footrests, save 11.7 kilograms in weight. Again: This by no means dainty, 157 PS strong two-cylinder weighs 189.5 kilograms in the accessory trim and easily undercuts almost every 600 and even rarities such as Ducati Desmosedici or 1098 R. And that, although the forged aluminum wheels are not as expected lighter than the series (wheel set with brake discs 13.7 kilograms each). The handling of the lightweight RC8 is noticeably more agile than in the standard trim because of the weight savings, so that – also in view of the fine finish – the price of around 24,000 euros is ultimately acceptable.

BMW R 1200 GS – accessories & Prices

The BMW customer can configure his machine individually with special equipment when buying a new one, something no other manufacturer offers to this extent. The machine can then be further spiced up by the dealer with plenty of original accessories. For the R 1200 GS there are not only functional extras such as luggage systems or heated grips, but also lots of fine carbon parts.

Harley-Davidson Screamin ?? Eagle Softail Springer Accessories & Prices

No longer in the range in Germany, the standard Softail Springer is still sold in the rest of the world. She deserves it too. Although the Springer fork does not respond particularly well, the chassis is wonderfully neutral even with the wide CVO tires and makes relaxed cruising a real pleasure.

KTM 1190 RC8 – accessories & Prices

PowerParts is what KTM calls the noble hardware with which ordinary series machines can be converted into real eye-catchers. And there are plenty of them among the Austrians. In the case of the Sport Twin 1190 RC8 That means lots of perfectly processed carbon, some nice milled aluminum parts and an impressively rumbling Akrapovic titanium damper, which can reduce the weight by more than ten kilograms.

Fact

There is something for every taste, but the prices can quickly destroy one or the other dream.

The stuff that motorcycle dreams are made of – it definitely has its price. Regardless of whether it shines chrome or shimmers black. And it is a profitable business for the manufacturers and a safe business for the customers. The guarantee and operating license are generally retained in full.

Harley-Davidson

Arnd Dickel, 40, Marketing Manager Parts, Accessories and MotorClothes Harley-Davidson Germany.

CVO – what does it mean?
CVO stands for Custom Vehicle Operations. Since 1999, a special department has been dedicated to the construction of particularly high-quality motorcycles. In the automotive sector, for example, it would be comparable to AMG. All motorcycles are assembled by special employees in a special production area. Manufacture in the truest sense of the word.

How many Screamin ‘Eagle models are made there every year?
Around 2500. For the 2008 model year these were the FXSTSSE2² Softail Springer, the FLHTCUSE³ Ultra Classic Electra Glide, the FLHRSE Road King and the FXDSE² Dyna. A good 1,000 motorcycles have come to Europe. With around 320 Harley-Davidson dealerships, each dealer receives an average of just one copy of each CVO series. It is therefore not uncommon for some models to be sold out before they are available at the dealer.

Speaking of selling! What about PA, i.e. spare parts and accessories, at Harley??
Let’s take 2007, for example. We produced 330619 Harley-Davidsons around the world, generating sales of around $ 4.5 billion. In PA, we were at $ 868.3 million. That translates to around $ 2,600 per vehicle sold.

The situation is similar in Germany?
Absolutely. With almost 7,000 vehicles sold, we made around 16 million euros in sales with PA. If you factor out around a quarter for clothing and the Buell share, that’s still around 1500 euros per vehicle. These figures relate to our sales to retailers. So you can see that our customers like personalized or as we say “customized bikes”.

Interview Jurgen Stoffregen (BMW Motorrad) – “The trend towards customization will expand”

Jurgen Stoffregen, 53, Head of Rider Equipment and Special Accessories at BMW Motorrad, on the extensive range of BMW products.

What is the economic significance of the rider equipment and accessories division within the motorcycle division?
Driver equipment and accessories made up almost eleven percent of sales in 2007 BMW motorcycle the end. In absolute figures, that is a sales volume of around 135 million euros. When buying a new vehicle, customers spend an average of between 500 and 1200 euros on accessories or driver equipment from the dealer. And without the special equipment that he already orders from the factory together with the vehicle.

And what about the existing customers, i.e. everyone who has had a BMW for a long time?
That is a very important point in this business. Even with fewer new registrations, the number of motorcycles continues to grow. This creates opportunities for growth in the accessories sector even in weak market phases.

How do you see the future of this division??
The trend towards customization will expand. Design, but also technical development, play a decisive role. For example the trend towards more electronics. Driver-passenger communication, but entertainment is also becoming more and more important. Just like the docking option for mobile phones.
