Are fashionable leather jackets just for the eye, or are they also suitable for motorcycling from a safety point of view? MOTORRAD presents the answers.

Manufacturers of motorcycle clothing now know that women have at least as much fun riding a motorcycle as men of creation. And offer clothing lines specially made for women. There is hardly a manufacturer in the two-wheeler sector who did not present new models at the Intermot trade fair in Munich last autumn.
MOTORRAD got an overview of the current range of fashionable leather jackets for women. Unfortunately, it has not yet been possible to procure some new products, as many manufacturers cannot deliver the jackets until the beginning of the season in spring. But there were still more than enough models that were put to a practical test in the editorial office.
Even if a large part of the jackets presented is certainly chosen on the basis of their design, it is in principle true for motorcycle clothing that it is primarily intended to protect? and chic cuts or patterns do not help at all. So the question is to what extent manufacturers bring fashion and protection under one roof. MOTORRAD therefore checked various safety criteria. And at this point I would like to point out that leather jackets may look pretty in combination with fabric or jeans trousers, but are of little use as full body protection: such trousers have neither sufficient abrasion protection nor protectors.
For trips that go beyond the nearest bakery or the cafe around the corner, MOTORRAD definitely recommends suitable trousers ?? preferably with a connection zipper to the jacket. And here is the first shortcoming of some jackets: Not all of them have a connecting zipper. Especially with the very short-cut models, there is a risk that they will slide up in the event of a fall.
In general, it is also true that strong metal zippers are more abrasion and tear resistant than filigree ones made of plastic ?? a crucial aspect of the front and connection zipper. Another important point in terms of safety is the type and attachment of the protectors used. The best protection is provided by non-slip CE protectors. Soft foam inserts are just as unsuitable as shells simply inserted with Velcro strips.
But passive safety or not? the best jacket is of no use if it doesn’t fit comfortably. Because only those who feel comfortable can drive safely. MOTORRAD checked the fit with six testers. But in the end, women cannot avoid trying them on in the shop. During the practical test of the leather pelts in two different sizes, it was noticeable that they turn out very differently. And with models from Italy, it is important to note: The number six must be subtracted from the Italian size specification in order to arrive at the German standard.
