The dawn of the 2000s saw the birth of a beautiful squadron of sportswomen of all kinds and from all backgrounds. The Princesses of Superbike, where large and small manufacturers alike wanted to mark this territory and performance. Honda, Kawasaki, Yamaha, Suzuki … but also Bimota, Ducati, Aprilia, Benelli have committed their forces in these competitions of men and mechanics.
And then, a new actor joined, full of ambitions and projects. A total surprise, because it is an oil tanker who embarked on the adventure. The clock has just started for the 21st century, pursued by Petronas and its 900 FP1. But starting from scratch to design and align a motorcycle in one of the most challenging championships on the planet is a colossal challenge … even for the biggest company in Malaysia..
At the start of the project, Petronas was aiming for the premier class. Nothing less than going to battle in MotoGP. Quite a challenge. As the Kuala Lumpur company had no experience in the field, it decided to develop its prototype in partnership with the Sauber company, from the world of Formula 1. But quickly, the choice was made to engage in Superbike instead. Sauber will then withdraw from the case..
To advance with a man of experience, she calls on the multiple Carl Fogarty World Championship. Generously subsidized, he created his Foggy Petronas Racing structure to run bikes. But before, there is work.
Regulations require, it is necessary to review the engine displacement and build the motorcycle in (small) series for homologation. Petronas therefore has 150 units manufactured, the minimum required, of which around 100 will be put on sale..
In WSBK at this time, it’s still time for the 750 cc 4-cylinder versus the 1000 cc twins – not for much longer. The regulations provide for an intermediate displacement of 900 cm3 for the 3 cylinders, which is almost non-existent. Benelli is already in the segment with 900 Tornado. Will FP1 be inspired by it ?
Not really. The development of the engine is taken over by Suter, who will have to redesign a large part of it. The work is complicated, the deadlines short, but the 3 cylinder is taking shape. Strangely, it is tilted back. This original arrangement is not the only peculiarity. The reverse positioning of the cylinder head forces the intake system to sit in the front while the exhaust pipes are behind. In Superbike configuration, the block manages to output 185 horsepower. On the track, he spits fire … in the true sense of the word.
The bike will go in the championship, but immediately disadvantaged because the regulations change in 2003, allowing all engines to cubic 1000 cm3 maximum regardless of the number of cylinders. The FP1 must however honor its commitment to a production. The English company MSX International was asked to manufacture the first 75 copies. The other series will be produced by Modenas, Malaysia.
Once adapted for civilian use, the engine delivers 127.4 horsepower at 10,000 rpm. A lower value than the Benelli or a VTR-SP2 of the time but enough to meet the Ducati 999 and Aprilia RSV 1000 R. Apart from this, the Triumph 955 Daytona does not play in the same court.
The curious three-legged boiler is installed in a much more conventional setting. A perimeter element with double spars made of aluminum, as in the Japanese competition. The suspensions are entrusted to Ohlins, with an inverted 43 mm fork and a rear shock absorber both adjustable from everywhere. A steering damper is present, also of Swedish origin. Braking is provided by Brembo. At the front, we find 320mm discs bitten by 4-piston calipers. Unfortunately, they do not benefit from the radial fixing as on the racing model.
As with any high-ranking model, you don’t mess around with beautiful elements. The rims are OZ Racing in forged aluminum, the fairing is in carbon and the tank in aluminum. The exhaust under the saddle belches through 3 outlets, just to recall the type of engine that boils in there. On the other hand, the dashboard does not inspire much enthusiasm; hardly more dashing than that of a stationary bike.
This FP1 was born in the desire to shine, pushed in its genesis by the force of a mountain of money. But his fate is worthy of being in the X-Files. After a few gloomy seasons in WSBK, the motorcycles are falling into oblivion. Until 2010, we find a lost warehouse in England … where 60 models sleep out of the 75 that were to leave for Malaysia. These have obviously never left the territory.
The advertised price was $ 45,000. Today, it is possible to see – rarely – FP1s in auctions. Motorcycle with an unfinished destiny, it carries with it an aura mixing mystery, wandering, and a certain fascination.
