The full-face helmets took part in the helmet test in their basic versions, i.e. mostly in simple colors and without decoration. Their prices are between 149 and 250 euros. It is precisely in this segment that the sales figures for full-face helmets are high and the competition is fierce. The customer has a choice and rightly expects significantly more than basic accident protection, i.e. passive safety in accordance with ECE standards, which is only about protecting the skull from the consequences of an accident.
1st place: Nolan N87
The full-face helmet Nolan N87 is available in sizes XXS to 3XL. Its helmet shell is made of Lexan. According to the manufacturer, it weighs 1530 to 1610 grams in size L, we measured 1636 grams when reweighing.
mps studio
Sun visor with finely graduated detent – very practical. The rest is also convincing down to the last detail with its practicality.
The Nolan N87 is fixed with a ratchet lock. The Nolan N87 is available in white, black and matt black, and there are also 13 decor variants available. The scope of delivery includes: air deflector, wind deflector on the chin, sun visor, helmet bag and Pinlock visor (mounted). The Nolan N87 is also prepared for the n-com communication system.
The Nolan N87 is made in Italy, its ECE approval mark E 3 also comes from there. It costs 209.99 euros without decor, and 234.99 to 299.99 euros with decor.
Replacement visors for the Nolan N87 are available in the versions clear (39.95 euros), tinted (39.95 euros) and mirrored (59.95 euros). Provider: Nolan, Tel. 0711/3108530, www.nolangroup.de
Noticed positively:
- Easy to put on and take off
- well balanced
- Excellent fit, head tightly enclosed, comfortable lining
- very good suitability for glasses
- impeccable aerodynamics
- relatively low noise level
- Sufficiently effective ventilation on the chin and top of the head, ventilation slider easy to use
- The visor seals absolutely draft-free
- large field of view
- good locking
- very easy visor change
- simple sun visor operation (with detent!) covers very well
- no water ingress
- very good workmanship
Noticed negatively:
- Opening lever chin lock a bit too small
Conclusion:
This is what clear test winners look like! The Nolan N87 completely convinced in the laboratory and in practice. The most varied of test heads were accommodated in an excellent way, and you can tell in almost every detail of the all-rounder how much experience the northern Italians have in helmet development.
MOTORRAD verdict: very good TEST WINNER
2nd place: Shark D-Skwal
The full-face helmet Shark D-Skwal is available in sizes XS to XL. Its helmet shell is made of thermoplastic. According to the manufacturer, it weighs 1530 grams in size L, we measured 1568 grams when reweighing.
mps studio
Anyone who likes cuddly, crumple helmet pads is wearing the right place here. And those who like to be on the go faster, too.
The Shark D-Skwal is fixed with a ratchet lock. The Shark D-Skwal is available in white, black and matt black, and 6 decors in 17 colors are also available. The scope of delivery includes: air deflector, wind deflector on the chin, sun visor, helmet bag and pinlock visor (included).

Noticed positively:
- Relatively easy to put on and take off
- good fit, head well enclosed, very comfortable
- good suitability for glasses
- aerodynamically largely inconspicuous (slight impulse when looking sideways)
- low noise level
- Easy-to-use ventilation sliders, on the top of the head with a good effect, on the chin with a satisfactory effect
- simple sun visor operation, covers very well
- Visor seals well, practical ventilation position, easy visor change
- satisfactory to good workmanship
Noticed negatively:
- Field of view relatively small, side view somewhat restricted
- strong water ingress after 90 seconds via ventilation
Conclusion:
The diligent collecting of points is worthwhile for the Shark D-Skwal: The Frenchman, made in Portugal, moves absolutely unobtrusively but very confidently to second place and is also at the forefront in terms of shock absorption. Quite a low noise level, good aerodynamics – a helmet for the brisk pace.
MOTORRAD verdict: good
3rd place: AGV K-3 SV
The full-face helmet AGV K-3 SV is available in sizes XS to XXL. Its helmet shell is made of thermoplastic. According to the manufacturer, it weighs 1525 grams in size L, we measured 1506 grams when reweighing.
The gap between the sun visor and the chin section is too large; but fit and aerodynamics are right.
The AGV K-3 SV is fixed with a ratchet lock. The AGV K-3 SV is available in the colors white, black and matt black, and 21 decor variants are also available.
The scope of delivery includes: air deflector, wind deflector on the chin, sun visor, helmet bag and pinlock visor (included).

Noticed positively:
- relatively easy to put on and take off
- good to very good fit, head tightly enclosed
- very good suitability for glasses
- Chin strap well padded
- overall good aerodynamics
- relatively low noise level
- very effective ventilation on the top of the head and chin section
- Service satisfactory to good
- The visor seals absolutely draft-free
- very easy visor change
Noticed negatively:
- Sun visor operation a bit fiddly
- Lever too small
- Light gap too big
- The top edge of the Pinlock visor is disruptive in the field of vision, the field of vision is relatively small
- Visor ventilation position too far
- Impact absorption values only average
- Water ingress after 65 seconds via ventilation
Conclusion:
The AGV K-3 SV, which has meanwhile been manufactured in China, delivers a decent overall performance, especially the snappy fit. Of the points of criticism, the most annoying one is probably the easiest to remove from the factory: A larger Pinlock inner visor will probably work wonders.
MOTORRAD verdict: good
4th place: HJC IS-17
The full-face helmet HJC IS-17 is available in sizes XXS to XXL. Its helmet shell is made of polycarbonate. According to the manufacturer, it weighs 1600 grams in size L, we measured 1618 grams when reweighing.
mps studio
Convinces with a great fit, an excellent visor and solid workmanship. But others can do it now too …
The HJC IS-17 is fixed with a ratchet lock. The HJC IS-17 is available in the colors white, black metallic and matt black, 16 decor variants as well as the versions yellow (209.90 euros) and Iron Man (279.90 euros) are available.

Noticed positively:
- Very easy to put on and take off
- well balanced
- good to very good fit, head tightly enclosed, comfortable lining
- good suitability for glasses
- satisfactory aerodynamics (slight impulse when looking sideways)
- effective ventilation at the top of the head
- The visor seals absolutely draft-free
- huge field of vision
- good locking
- very easy visor change
- Sun visor covers very well
- good to very good workmanship
Noticed negatively:
- Sun visor operation takes getting used to, no longer up-to-date (overhead)
- Chin ventilation without noticeable function
- Chin strap pad too short
- Water ingress after 50 seconds through the visor seal
Conclusion:
In the 2013 mid-range helmet test, it was submitted for the HJC IS-17 “very good”, second place and for the “Buying tip”. The IS-17 is now a helmet oldie and no worse than it was back then (apart from the shock absorption values), but the other candidates have followed suit and have partly overtaken the HJC IS-17.
MOTORRAD verdict: good
5th place: Scorpion EXO-510 Air
The full-face helmet Scorpion EXO-510 Air is available in sizes XXS to 3XL. Its helmet shell is made of polycarbonate. According to the manufacturer, it weighs 1500 grams in size L, we measured 1560 grams when reweighing.
A typical rip-off when putting it on and taking it off, but the rest of it fits perfectly. Scorpion is at the forefront.

Noticed positively:
- Good fit, head well enclosed, comfortable
- satisfactory to good suitability for glasses
- aerodynamically largely inconspicuous (minimal hiking from 180 km / h)
- Very easy to use ventilation slider, on the top of the head with good function
- Very simple sun visor operation, covers well, can be fixed at three heights
- large field of view, visor seals well, very easy visor change
- no water ingress
- good workmanship
Noticed negatively:
- Somewhat arduous putting on and taking off
- Chin ventilation without function
- Ventilation position too far
- Impact absorption values only average
Conclusion:
The Koreans learn very quickly and have taken another step forward with the Scorpion EXO-510 Air. The fit is right, some somewhat playful detailed solutions are really useful (sun visor height adjustment) and in the worst case not disturbing (cheek pad pump).
MOTORRAD verdict: good
6th place: LS2 FF397 Vector
The full-face helmet LS2 FF397 Vector is available in sizes XXS to 3XL. Its helmet shell is made of fiberglass. According to the manufacturer, it weighs 1300 grams in size L, we measured 1456 grams when reweighing.

- good suitability for glasses
- relatively low noise level
- Very easy to use ventilation slider, on the top of the head with a satisfactory effect
- very simple sun visor operation, covers very well
- very large field of view
- Visor seals well, practical ventilation position
- very easy visor change
- processing
Noticed negatively:
- Difficult to put on and take off
- Cheek pads too pronounced
- slight aerodynamic weaknesses (wanders from 160 km / h)
- Visor lock fiddly
- Water ingress through the visor seal after 70 seconds
Conclusion:
LS LS2 FF397 Vector is a further step forward as part of the ever faster LS2 evolution. It’s amazing how much the Chinese have learned in a very short time, the verdict “Good” is the reward earned. There is still room for improvement, but there are no dramatic weaknesses.
MOTORRAD verdict: good
7th place: Nexo Fiberglas Sport
The full-face helmet Nexo Fiberglas Sport is available in sizes XS to XL. Its helmet shell is made of fiberglass. According to the manufacturer, it weighs 1530 grams in size L, we measured 1656 grams when reweighing.
mps studio
Great potential for wellbeing, but Pinlock size, visor change and a few equipment details are no longer up-to-date.

Noticed positively:
- Very easy to put on and take off
- satisfactory to good fit, quite comfortable (but possibly a bit too plush)
- good suitability for glasses
- Upper head ventilation with satisfactory effect
- simple sun visor operation, covers very well
- no water ingress
Noticed negatively:
- Weight
- Chin strap way too long and not secured against flapping
- slight aerodynamic weaknesses (impulse when looking sideways, wanders from 140 km / h)
- Pinlock edge annoying in the field of vision
- The edge of the sun visor is severely distorted
- Ventilation slide fiddly to use
- Chin ventilation without noticeable function
- Visor change fiddly
- z. T. somewhat rustic workmanship
- Impact absorption values below average
Conclusion:
More would have been possible for the Nexo Fiberglas Sport, but rather moderate shock absorption values and the relatively high weight cost decisive points that make up the otherwise well-deserved judgment “Good” absence. The basis is right, and that “Odds and ends” (Chin strap, pinlock) can be corrected with a new edition.
MOTORRAD verdict: satisfactory
8th place: Hero Masuda
The full-face helmet hero Masuda is available in sizes XS to XXL. Its helmet shell is made of fiberglass. According to the manufacturer, it weighs 1400 grams in size L, we measured 1494 grams when reweighing.
mps studio
Getting in is a bit difficult, getting out is a bit more difficult. But the chinstrap is spot on.

Noticed positively:
- Chin strap hinged well
- satisfactory suitability for glasses
- Sun visor covers well;
- satisfactory shock absorption values
- relatively easy visor change
- cheap replacement visors
- no water ingress
Noticed negatively:
- Difficult to put on and take off
- Inharmonious fit, chin part may be too short, chin hits slightly
- aerodynamically somewhat unsatisfactory (hiking impulse from 150 km / h, clear impulse when looking sideways)
- high noise level even at high speed on the highway
- Ventilation slide fiddly to use and practically without function
- Sun visor a bit fiddly to use, mechanics rattles and is stiff
- Pinlock visor not included
- Ventilation position too far
Conclusion:
The hero Masuda looks a bit out of date, this is what middle-class helmets looked like ten years ago. Nowadays, comparable products tend to be in a price class below, i.e. around 100 euros. The fit and aerodynamic weaknesses no longer have to be accepted.
MOTORRAD verdict: satisfactory
9th place: Rocc 486
The full-face helmet Rocc 486 is available in sizes XS to XL. Its helmet shell is made of ABS. According to the manufacturer, it weighs 1400 grams in size L, we measured 1472 grams when reweighing.
mps studio
It becomes clear relatively quickly why the helmet is the cheapest offer in the test field. Inexpensive? That’s the big question.
The Rocc 486 is fixed with a ratchet lock. The Rocc 486 is available in the colors white and matt black, and 8 decor variants are also available.
The scope of delivery includes: air deflector, wind deflector on the chin, sun visor, helmet bag and pinlock preparation.

Noticed positively:
- Chin strap hinged well
- large field of vision, visor seals well
- easy sun visor operation, covers well
- easy change of visor
- cheap replacement visor
- price
Noticed negatively:
- Slightly difficult to put on and take off
- Inharmonious fit, no clearly defined fit, various pressure points
- aerodynamically unsatisfactory (hiking impulse from 120 km / h)
- high noise level
- Ventilation slide fiddly to use and practically without function
- Chin strap pad too short
- Lower edge of the sun visor distorted
- Pinlock visor not included
- unsatisfactory shock absorption values
- Water ingress after 20 seconds via ventilation
Conclusion:
The Rocc 486 is cheap in comparison, but too expensive for what is on offer, because many weaknesses in detail tarnish the picture. In particular, the mediocre fit and the unsatisfactory shock absorption values cost points. Target group? Urban scooter drivers, but they get something comparable for less than 100 euros.
MOTORRAD verdict: satisfactory
10th place: IXS HX 444
The full-face helmet IXS HX 444 is available in sizes XS to XXL. Its helmet shell is made of fiberglass. According to the manufacturer, it weighs 1450 grams in size L, we measured 1528 grams when reweighing.
mps studio
Does not fit, wobbles and has air – convincing is different, but the sun visor operation works flawlessly.
The IXS HX 444 is fixed with a ratchet lock. The IXS HX 444 is available in matt black, and 11 decors are also available.
The scope of delivery includes: air deflector, wind deflector on the chin, sun visor, helmet bag and Pinlock visor (mounted).

Replacement visors for the IXS XS 44 are available in the versions clear (29.90 euros), tinted (29.90 euros) and mirrored (36.90 euros).
Noticed positively:
- Relatively easy to put on and take off
- satisfactory suitability for glasses
- effective, easy-to-use overhead ventilation
- simple sun visor operation
- easy change of visor
Noticed negatively:
- Very inhomogeneous fit, loose and spongy, no defined fit
- Chin strap hinged very far back, possibly pressing on the larynx
- Chin strap pads too short and thin
- The visor can only be closed completely with both hands
- aerodynamically very unsatisfactory (wobbles and vibrates from 120 km / h, extreme lift)
- very high noise level even at high speed on a country road
- Chin ventilation ineffective
- strong water ingress after 60 seconds over the visor seal
Conclusion:
Another representative from the “Does-no-longer-fit-in-the-time / price range” series. Fit, aerodynamics, acoustics – the IXS HX 444 scores points everywhere. The Chinese helmet is rather unsuitable for anything over the country road limit. Fiberglass shouldn’t be the only selling point.
MOTORRAD verdict: satisfactory
