A break in tradition with a water-cooled V2 engine

Surprising news from Harley: For the first time in over 100 years, water in the V2 bumper engine is supposed to help keep a cool head. MOTORRAD drove the water-cooled Harley-Davidson Electra Glide Ultra Limited.

August 2013 at the Art Museum in Denver / Colorado. US-typical proud-patriotic and relaxed American presentation Harley-Davidson launched its 2014 models: ABS for all Sportsters and, for the first time since 1909, combined air / water cooling at the core of the company, the 45-degree V2 engine. Wow! Break of tradition after 110 years of history? Not quite. First of all, all touring models have slightly more powerful engines, the High Output Twin Cam 103 with new camshafts and flow-optimized air filters. On this V2, Harley only plants water-cooled new cylinder heads for the two opulent Electra Glides, namely the Ultra Classic and the Ultra Limited.

Break of tradition with a water-cooled V2 engine

Street Glide as currently the most built Harley and the Road King Classic on cooler heads. Until inconspicuous coolers arrive there too? The “Project Rushmore”, the development of the 2014 Touring models, took three and a half years. The results of large customer surveys were incorporated into it.

100 components on Harley-Davidson Electra Glide revised

One result: E-Glide riders really wanted to be less “grilled” during summer parades. Harley has revised a total of 100 components between the front and rear fenders on the tourers. All without changing the style. The sound, look and feel were retained. In front of the Denver museum, the E-Glide looks like a moving sculpture. See and be seen. “How cool is that?” Asks an admirer. He means the total work of art with the organically shaped Batwing panel, which has been a style-defining since 1969. It has a lockable flap for better ventilation and is sleeker on the sides. The XXL windshield, which swings out with the handlebars, towers over the modern, bright blue LED headlights.

With the additional LED lights on the left and right, the new lamp is a sure sign of the 2014 Electra Glide Ultra Limited. It takes effort to lift them off the side stand. Phew, a full 414 kilograms combines the heaviest Harley, one kilo more than before. The water cooling components weigh five kilograms, offset by lighter “impeller” wheels and fenders. Done, the machine is upright. The eye falls on four enlarged round clocks with new dials in the interior cladding covered with black glossy lacquer.

E-Glide Ultra Limited damn valuable and noble

The E-Glide Ultra Limited, which costs almost 28,500 euros, looks damned valuable and classy. Both handlebar fittings have new switches – including joysticks for navigating through the on-board menu. The right thumb presses the start button. Kawumm! The new old V2 wakes up, stomps in its elastic suspensions, lifts the mighty motorcycle up and down, massages the pit of the stomach. Quake and life. This is how it was, is and will remain with a Harley. Klonk, the first course is sitting. The hydraulic clutch engages smoothly and easily. There is just something to put down with this road cruiser, to grace asphalt.

The subdued, bassy bubbling sound is accompanied by snorkeling from the new airbox and good sound from four on-board speakers. Harman Kardon is supplying the audio system, including a 6.5-inch color touchscreen. It shows tons of information, including music tracks and album covers. GPS shows us the way to the west. To the promised motorcycle land, the Rocky Mountains. Get out on the highway. The two-valve V2, which pulsates gently while driving, is unspectacular, completely smooth. The 2014 engine should deliver three HP and four Nm more, regardless of whether it is air-cooled or partially water-cooled. But you can’t feel it. In the lower gears, the extreme long-stroke only turns slowly over the 5000 mark. Before that you can hear when the flap in the right exhaust opens at around 3000.

Bearish draft is different, downshifting to fourth is no mistake. At 130 km / h in the sixth, the engine only turns 3000 tours. You can still listen to the music there. Especially when the flap, which can be operated with one hand, is open, it becomes acoustically quieter and the flow on the helmet calmer. Depending on the wind and weather, rotating fins direct cooling airflow to the right and left onto the chest. Fine!

Good-natured Brummer is sufficiently precise

In long drawn-out Hihgway curves, it stirs at 100 miles per hour, 160 km / h, noticeably in the framework. So what? Easy going! Instead, the ultra-casual touring cruiser inspires with its high entertainment value. The hummingbird follows the gentle, then narrow curves of the Rockies with good-naturedness, sufficiently precisely and literally handy: You have to touch it properly. And don’t overdo it with the pace, stay relaxed, enjoy the landscape.

You don’t even want to get down from the cozy, now even more comfortable leather seats. The 2014 more stable fork with 49er stanchions cushions and cushions a lot. The shock absorber also makes you feel comfortable, but with a short spring deflection it does not quite keep up with the processing when you lift it quickly. Full deceleration, that’s what it’s all about.

Front and rear wheels brake together from 40 km / h

When cruising, and now also when braking. Electronically coupled, the front and rear wheels always decelerate together from 40 km / h. Stepping on the pedal activates up to 70 percent of the brake pressure in the front left four-piston caliper. How much exactly depends on the speed and the pressure applied in the primary brake circuit. The hand lever builds up noticeably more braking force by pinching the back as well. But only foot and hand together can bring out the full, considerable braking power. Always ABS-regulated, of course. OK then!

Harley-Davidson will present all new models including the two E-Glides with “water heads” at the European Bike Week from September 3rd to 8th in Faak / Austria. The novelties will be available for German dealers at the “Open House” on September 14th. Hot discussions among traditionalists are guaranteed. It’s good when everyone can keep a cool head – like the redesigned Electra Glide Ultra Limited.

New items 2014

Harley-Davidson

New to the 2014 sports star: new brakes, exhausts and ABS – all integrated in an optically discreet way.

And here is the rest of the 2014 vintage: a total of 25 revised motorcycles, four individualized CVO special models and a trike.

The Sportster models benefit from extensive model updates. You are now decelerating with new brake systems with modified brake discs, calipers and pistons. As the last Harley series, the Sportster also received ABS. ABS is optional on the Iron 883 and standard on the other seven Sportster types. Also new for all Sportstern in 2014: modified exhaust systems and handlebar fittings as well as on-board electrics with CAN data bus system. The speedometer integrates a new LCD display, among other things for gear indicator and tachometer. In addition to the immobilizer and alarm system, the “Keyless Ignition System” now allows the engine to be started without a key. Eleven new color variants are available, the prices including ABS start at 8955 euros (883 R and Super Low), plus 380 euros for ancillary costs.

There is also a lot that is new in the Dyna family. So far the Dyna Street Bob and Super Glide Custom still had V2 engines with 1585 cc. Now, like other Dynas before, you get the 1690 cm³ Twin Cam 103 with more torque. In addition, the popular Dyna Fat Bob has been extensively revised. In addition to renewed tank graphics, this includes the significantly changed design of the rear fender with integrated LED rear light.

The seat was given a more comfortable shape with a “sportier” cover. Also new: tank console, silencer and black, slotted 16-inch light-alloy disc wheels with laser-engraved graphics. Two additional colors in 2014 are “Amber Whiskey” and “San Cammo Denim”; Prices from 16,885 euros (plus 490 euros for additional costs)

The CVO Softail Deluxe (30,925 euros) is a new addition to the portfolio of “Custom Vehicle Operations” bikes that have been converted from the factory. In limited numbers, it offers clear lines, exquisite “art deco paintwork” and suitability for travel thanks to panniers and windshield. The modified Trike Tri Glide Ultra Classic is officially coming to Germany; Price: from 36385 euros.
