Breakout !!! A name that slams like an American blockbuster. A crunch of the shoulders on a metal partition. Harley-Davidson has sublimated the public by initially offering in 2012 this thunderous Softail in Custom Vehicle Operations version. Big luxury for a new machine, that immediately establishes a reputation. The craze was such that the manufacturer made it more accessible in 2013. By removing the CVO, a little ostentatious, the spangled paint and a lot of euros, the FXSB 103 ci Breakout strengthens the customs clan to strong charisma.
Very long, very low, very refined, the Breakout is a reinterpretation of the “Gassers”, famous dragters of the 50s and 60s. Having removed the entire CVO range makes it more virile, more “hairy”. We no longer show off in front of the Jean-Paul Gautier exhibition; make way for fights in front of hard-rock cafes.
“With the Breakout, we are going back to the basics of motorcycling by putting the emphasis on the engine, transmission and wheels.” Here’s what Kirk Rasmussen, H-D Design Director, thinks. This perfectly symbolizes the spirit and the idea, but it is exactly the same speech with each new product…. Boring !
The Breakout relies on these attributes rather than the high-sounding marketing rhetoric to charm bikers and bring down young ladies. There is this gait, where the body seems to be chasing the front wheel which dreams of escaping. And this crowd of details, where stanzas of black contrast with the scent of chrome. The fork shines with all its being until the dark covers the ends. The dragster-type handlebars become more discreet and yet uncompromising.
This Softail adopts all new rims developed especially for it. 21 and 18 inch “Gasser” wheels with 10 spokes, whose gloss black epoxy finish is alternately affixed to bring out the aluminum. Do not shy away from your pleasure in capturing the intensity of these details. You want your senses to be imbued with it…. of those fenders truncated to the maximum, of this strip of leather on the tank which hides the welds, of this enormous 240 mm tire, of this minimalist (but complete) speedometer mounted on a booster, of the chrome cover placed just high enough to hide the cables and air intakes. Attention to detail and finish is everywhere, with the engine as a point of pride. Pulsating and throaty heart, the twin is painted black and covered with chrome parts.
The Twin Cam is here the 103B version, in other words, it cube 1690 cm3, is mounted rigid in the frame but benefits from balance shafts to limit vibrations. Very fat, its torque exceeds 13 mkg at only 3000 rpm. Its groan is expressed by two exhausts also decorated with chrome and black. Belt drive and 6-speed gearbox are customary.
Alternating between authenticity and modernity, the chassis consists of a falsely rigid “hardtail” type frame, with two shock absorbers hidden under the frame, a fork at the very open angle, a single disc brake per wheel. Almost invisible, the ABS and the “Security Package” are fitted as standard. Let’s stay on the brakes – the Moco reinforces the will and the capabilities of the system. The front disc widens from 292 to 300 mm. The caliper and master cylinder are redesigned, the latter also benefiting from a performance-enhancing design. With the high friction material of the pads, the effort required on the lever is reduced almost in half. Harley announces 40% less for optimal braking.
By taking the 1690 Breakout, you don’t get on board; we go down there. The saddle is only 660 mm from the ground. The secondary ottoman allows you to take Madam and can be easily detached to proudly display a bad attitude (when the companion has just shouted ;-).
Rock to perfection and hard on the edges, the standard Breakout costs almost 10,000 euros less than the FXSBSE 1800 CVO.
