The Japanese brand is one of the oldest suppliers of airbag vests – hit-air vests with ripcord release were already available around the turn of the millennium. Over the years, the company has supplied manufacturers such as Spidi, iXS and Louis with airbags for numerous vests and jackets. Hit-Air has also been using its technology in equestrian sports since 2003. Now the Japanese brand has refined its flagship motorcycle vests and the result was the Hit-Air MLV II.

Airbag vest in 2 versions

The second generation airbag vest is available in two versions: MLV-P II (completely in neon yellow) and MLV-RC II (muted color, with reflectors). Regardless of the designation, the MLV II is designed to protect the rider’s torso, back and tailbone, while the inflatable collar is designed to prevent both neck and collarbone injuries. For the 2021 model update, Hit-Air is strengthening critical areas of the vest and optimizing the fit.

Hit-Air MLV II undercuts EU norm

The Hit-Air MLV II is still cable-controlled, which means that the vest is connected to the motorcycle with a rip cord, so to speak. According to the manufacturer, the revised inflator not only meets the European airbag vest standard (EN 1621-4), but even exceeds it: The MLV II should deploy its airbag within 90-160 milliseconds, which is well below the statutory 200 Milliseconds.

Furthermore, the Co2 cartridge itself and the cartridge housing on the vest have been reinforced for the further developed Hit-Air MLV II. The newly formed and stiffened textile part is supposed to protect the cartridge even better from damage and thus increase the durability and reliability of the MLV II.

Price and availability

Hit-Air also installs a new back protector that distributes the impact force from direct impacts. It also has a memory shape to support an individual fit. The protector can be removed at any time if necessary.

At 545 euros, the Hit-Air MLV II is one of the more affordable airbag options on the market. There are four sizes to choose from. The MLV II airbag vest can be pre-ordered from May and will be delivered to Hit-Air dealers from mid-June 2021.

Conclusion

Anyone who would like to forego high-tech airbag jackets and the associated software updates and subscription models, but not airbag technology in general, could be well served with a cable-controlled airbag vest such as the MLV II.
