Honda NC 700 S 2012

Attention, upheaval in sight. In creating the NC 700 S, Honda is offering you more than a motorcycle, but just seeing it or trying it won’t tell you. This roadster, new from A to Z, is also the face of the A2 license of 2013, and it is also a new definition of the urban and utility motorcycle.. Here is the indirect descendant of the CB 500 and NTV 700.

Simple, pretty but nothing more, almost serious, the NC 700 is not a streetfighter. In its design, it already expresses its vocation. Always rolls, without fuss but always ready. With this model, Honda returns to a niche neglected by manufacturers: that of the first motorcycle, cheap, not too powerful, easy to access, as were the CB 500, Kawa ER-5, Suzuki 500 GS and Yam XJ 600. That doesn’t mean it’s low-end designed in a rush. Everything is new on this machine, starting with the engine.

Honda has developed a brand new twin, which also powers the X version (cross country, don’t think of anything else…) and the Integra scooter. Very modern mechanics, and which goes against the biker genes of yesteryear. Not so long ago, technology was galvanized by the quest for horses, overflowing powers per liter, had to pull arms and catapult you to Mars. Forget about it with the line of NC 700. They are the precursors of the reasonable, the children of the crisis, of pollution and of consumption. Here, the twin knows only one word: economy.

Already, there is no question of getting out of the wild boars. We do not rush out of vilo, with 35 KW announced, or 47.5 horsepower. This is exactly the limit imposed by the future A2 license. The NC 700 is not only measured power for new riders but also already ready for new European regulations. However, it will not be tasteless: watts peak at a very reasonable 6250 rpm, and maximum torque is reached before 5000 rpm. No need to make the mill howl to get the most out of it. The 270 ° setting will bring a little character to the whole.

Technically, it was thought to do well and here possible several choices at the same time, always with the aim of avoiding any waste of energy. The cylinder head only contains a camshaft, which takes care not only of the valve dance but also of the water pump drive. Dual function also for the balance shaft, dampening vibrations on the one hand, and taking care of the oil pump on the other hand. The number of parts is also limited: a single injector, a single outlet at the end of the cylinder head for the exhaust gases, which will only travel ten centimeters before reaching the catalyst. Placed so close, it warms up faster in order to be quickly effective.
This block, it competes in sobriety. Honda announces 3.6 liters per 100. Incredible! The consumption of a 125. With its 14 liter tank, you are ready for 400 road terminals. But let’s put things in perspective: these figures are obtained with the dual clutch version, and in the D mode, as sporty as a Homer Simpson.

Double clutch? You mean… ..? That yes, the NC 700 will also be available with the robotic double clutch gearbox, as on the VFR 1200 and the Crosstourer. The perfect co-pilot for getting around town, with the choice of an all-auto gearbox, featuring a sport or quiet driving mode, and a pulse mode where the pilot flicks gears on a button. The double clutch, one controlling the even gears and the other the odd gears, allows an ultra fast and super smooth selection.

Honda NC 700 S 2012

Let’s go back to our basic NC 700 S. Halfway between utility and roadster, this machine doesn’t need a hypersport chassis. The manufacturer thus offered it a classic but sufficient ‘diamond’ frame made of steel tubes. At the front, a single disc takes care of the braking (adequate for performance, but surprising for a machine of this size and this displacement), and could be assisted by the C-ABS – an anti-lock device coupled with a system that activates the front brake when the rear is requested.
Important point, and strong point: the engine block is tilted strongly forward. This not only lowers the center of gravity, promotes agility, but it frees up space in the frame. Instead of the tank (the real one is under the saddle), there is a trunk that can accommodate a full face helmet. A great trick, already used in Aprilia 850 Mana, also equipped with an automatic gearbox.
New, the dashboard is entirely digital, displaying speed, two trips, clock, and in bar graph form, engine speed and fuel gauge. The bike is also equipped with the HISS immobilizer, an engine guard, petal brake discs, a low saddle height of 790 mm, and a not very slim weight, ranging from 211 to 227 kilos, depending on the presence or absence of C-ABS and DCT.

Honda NC 700 S 2012

Why did many start with a CB 500 or a Diversion? Because it was cheap. And the NC 700 S is in the same vein. This roadster is offered at a real attack price: 5,490 euros. No need to take out the calculator; apart from a 125 or a 250, there is no cheaper. No trap, but no bow either. To benefit from absences, add 500 euros to the bill. And for a walk in the tranquility of the auto gearbox, it’s 1,500 more. You shouldn’t expect furious acceleration or bloody arsouilles. Even blowing up the bridle, there will only be 52 horsepower on call. The NC 700 S takes up the ideal of a genre that has almost disappeared today: the handyman, for everyone, especially beginners, and even more so for urbanites.
