Honda NT 1100: Crossover bike with Africa Twin engine
Honda NT 1100 for 2022
Crossover model with an Africa Twin engine
Everything points to a Honda crossover bike for 2022 – in spring 2020 the patents for two new framework concepts and now, in February 2021, the application for the trademark registration of the name “NT 1100”.

Crossover, all-rounder, sports tourer, adventure tourer – depending on which manufacturer it is, the naming of this motorcycle concept is different. The models are called, for example, BMW S 1000 XR, F 900 XR, Kawasaki Versys 1000, MV Agusta Turismo Veloce and Yamaha Tracer 9. All of them offer an upright seating position and proper wind protection, do not claim to tear anything off-road, prefer to be dynamic with them keep up with sporty naked bikes. And this is where the Honda NT 1100 will line up.
The name “Honda NT 1100” is certain
At the beginning of February, Honda applied to the European Patent Office to register the brand name “NT 1100”. With a look at the predecessors of the NT initials, that makes sense. The whole concept is reminiscent of the Honda Deauville, which the Japanese had derived from the legendary NTV models at the time. The Deauville was never a best seller, but its travel qualities were well recognized. The Honda NTV 700 Deauville was manufactured with its 65 HP V2 engine until 2012.

Honda NT 1100 possibly for 2022
The rumors from Japan that the new Honda model will become part of the Honda model range in 2022 are further solidified by the current application to register the brand name. Because such a trademark registration usually takes about six months. So enough time to present a Honda NT 1100 this year, which could be on the market as early as 2022.
1100 engine from the Africa Twin
The Honda model range would be excellent, because between the all-rounder NC 750 X with 59 hp and the touring ship Gold Wing there is a gaping void. The Sporttourer VFR 800 and the VFR 800 X Crossrunner are still in use on the German Honda side, but these two Euro 4 models are no longer built. A modern crossover tourer with upright ergonomics and the Euro 5-compliant in-line twin cylinder of the Honda Africa Twin CRF 1100 L would optimally close this gap. The 1100 in the Africa Twin delivers 102 hp at 7,500 rpm and 105 Nm at 6,250 rpm. Thus the Honda NT 1100 would have a little less power than the 119 hp Yamaha Tracer 9, but more displacement and torque.
CB4X Concept as a design template
Rumors from Japan suggest that the Honda NT 1100 looks a lot better Concept bike CB4X will lean on. The concept was presented at EICMA in 2019 and delighted visitors and media representatives alike. The more upright seating position, the half-shell and the height-adjustable windshield already follow some of the successful models on the market such as the Yamaha Tracer 7 and Tracer 9 or the BMW S 1000 XR and F 900 XR. The chassis of the Honda NT 1100 will use 17-inch rims.

The CB4X Concept presented at EICMA 2019 probably serves as a design template for the new Honda NT 1100.
Patent specification for framework concepts
A Honda patent specification that emerged in March 2020 shows the in-line two-cylinder from the Africa Twin in focus, but the frame around it already indicated a completely new concept. The patent shows two different frame constructions relating to the two-cylinder engine. Variant a) relies on a trellis bridge frame made of steel tubes with screwed cast aluminum elements that accommodate the rear frame and the swing arm. The rear frame also seems to be made of a cast aluminum part. The frame version b) comes with a central tube above the engine and a forked frame below the two-cylinder. The rear frame is screwed on as a cast part. In both cases the motor is integrated as a stabilizing element.

For the Honda NT 1100 it will probably come down to variant b), since the CB4X Concept, which was the original design, relied on the frame of the CB 650 R. It is not yet known whether or when another model with frame variant a) will come.
Conclusion
With this approach, Honda has the opportunity to offer a new model in the booming middle class at a relatively low cost – and that in two versions. With the Africa Twin, there is also an adequate technology dispenser ready.
