Honda patent application for new engine

New drive for NC models with 850 cm³

According to a patent application, Honda could work on an 850 cc engine that could be used in new NC models and a small Africa Twin.

A few weeks ago we reported speculations about a new Honda Africa Twin with a weaker engine than the CRF 1100 L, which could start with an 850 cc engine that was further developed from the NC models. Now Honda has filed a patent application supporting these rumors. It is obvious that the new 850 parallel twin could also be used in new NC models in the future.

Euro5 standard forces action

The NC models from Honda are fairly popular in this country and, thanks to their suitability for everyday use and the manageable price, are often at the top of the list

Honda is working on a new in-line twin cylinder with 850 cc?

If you take a closer look at the patent drawings of the new 850 parallel twin, it quickly becomes clear that this is more of a completely new engine than a heavily redesigned one. The design of the new engine suggests a significantly flatter positioning of the same. Accordingly, the drive shown in the drawings is more compact in comparison than the previous engine with 750 cm³ displacement. In addition, the patent drawings suggest a dual clutch transmission, which we already know from other Honda models. Although the motor is in the current NC chassis in the drawings shown, it can be seen that the new drive does not seem to be intended for the design of the current NC models. Accordingly, we can count on major revisions to the chassis for potential new NC models.

Performance data are not yet known. The current 750 series two-cylinder engine in the NC 750 X develops 55 hp at 6,250 rpm and 68 Nm at 4,750 rpm. The current NC 750 X is available from 8,100 euros. It will be interesting to see if and when Honda will present more information about new and Euro 5-compliant models for 2021. Patent applications do not necessarily mean that the planned projects will actually be incorporated into series production. Incidentally, Honda had recently registered numerous other patents. So in the near future there could be an even more conclusion

Slowly but surely, the rumors are increasing – the patent application that has now been filed for a new in-line two-cylinder engine fits perfectly into the overall picture. With a little luck, we can expect some new mid-range models from Honda in the near future. In any case, we wouldn’t mind.
