Head-up display for motorcycles
Head-up displays have been known from the automotive sector for a long time. Various helmet manufacturers are also working on this technology. Honda has now patented a system that is attached directly to the motorcycle.

The flood of information in road traffic increases more and more, even when you are on a motorcycle. In the past, basic data such as speed and engine speed as well as a few indicator lights displayed by analog clocks and small light bulbs were sufficient, but now the volume of data that the driver has to deal with has multiplied. Here the navigation system flashes in the multifunctional TFT color display, there the connected telephone reports, in between an assistance system warns and the action cam also wants to be operated at the same time.
Projection surface as a touchscreen
So that really important information always appears in the driver’s field of vision, Honda has now patented a head-up display system for motorcycles. The system should be suitable for almost all types of motorcycles – a prerequisite, however, is always an available projection surface. This can be, for example, the inside of a windshield, or a corresponding surface on the top of the tank. This projection surface is equipped with a touch-sensitive surface and can thus also serve as a touchscreen, which of course can also be operated with gloved fingers.

The projector then sits opposite in the tank, the fairing or in the handlebars. The patent specification shows installation examples for an Africa Twin, a sports machine and a cruiser. Navigation instructions, warnings and numerous other basic data can be displayed here.
With the relatively large but thin projection touchscreen surface, a lot of information could be displayed in a structurally small space. An important aspect on motorcycles, where space is limited and weight is a relevant factor.
