Patent for ventilated stern
Aerodynamic efficiency is also becoming increasingly important in motorcycles. In the recent past, developers have mainly focused on the front. Honda is targeting the rear with a new patent.

Mainly driven by developments in racing, various motorcycle manufacturers have equipped their current sports bikes with wing elements and spoilers at the front. The focus here is primarily on the downforce on the front wheel. A few years ago, when speed bikes like the Suzuki Hayabusa took the stage, it was about extreme wind slippage to be able to reach extreme speeds. A coherent overall concept was required here in front of and behind the lying driver – with correspondingly sweeping rear sections. However, since the rider on a motorcycle is an extremely variable factor, the requirements here are much more complex. Sitting posture, height, clothing – all factors that influence the air flow.
However, current design trends leave no room for large rear ends. The area behind the driver is becoming ever more delicate. Various current superbikes are already being used with flow-through solutions for the Alibi pillion seat in order to optimize the flow. In all other segments, however, this approach hardly plays a role.
Double spoiler and tail bag
In Japan, a patent has now been published by Honda that revolves around a wing element behind the rider – on a classic naked bike. We have identified the CB 1000 R (SC60) as the basis. It only comes as a single-seater, a two-wing spoiler element with a stabilizing center bar takes the place of the pillion passenger. Honda positioned a raised double rear silencer underneath. The SC60 still had an under-engine exhaust. The entire rear is short and ends roughly at the level of the wheel axle.

Bag for small items.
The layered wing elements are intended to increase downforce, and the flow to calm the air flow. How far the Honda ideas in this patent specification go in the direction of series production is shown by the design of a rear bag for small items that goes with the wing element and which can be removed as a belt bag. If this is mounted on the rear of the vehicle, the aerodynamic effect of the flow is of course a thing of the past.
As always, the following applies to these patents – the manufacturer has protected an idea. This does not necessarily have to result in series development.
