Arriving early in the crossover category, the Crossrunner allowed the VFR to expand its field of action through a face and expanded skills. Thus, this ‘trail’ closely follows the evolution of the sport-GT. Complying in concert, it is equipped with a new exhaust and abandons the black coating on the fork sleeves. We also note the arrival of an adjustable bubble.
Essentially based on the eponymous Sport-GT, the VFR 800 X Crossrunner only needed a dash of optimism from Honda to improve. This ambiguous concept, a mix of roadster, trail and sport tourism, received its first in 2015 and you don’t mind evolution. No change in its identity and vocation but a much more aerial silhouette and largely reinforced technical background.
The Crossrunner had been discovered as an obese sparrow, with a chest and shoulders too full, like tanks of cold meats and lard. We are witnessing a spectacular remodeling of its plastic, with a very marked 1200 Crosstourer inspiration. The large sidewalls have given way to much more modest scoops, the fork crown is more incisive, with a look unmistakably reminiscent of the last generation VFR 800, the rear is really more trail, and the new rims give a small very nice sport touch. Overall, the feeling of cleanliness is obvious; as if the 2015 Crossrunner had lost 50 kilos.
Before being X, this machine is above all a VFR. Frame, engine and peripherals are therefore fully taken and then “overlaid” with elements to make it more relaxed. Thus, the VFR 800 X phase 2 increases its suspension travel by 25 mm at the front and 28 mm at the rear – not enough to cross the forest off the trails but enough to make it a S.U.V..
Under the trim, we find everything that VFRists appreciate (or not): the 782 cm3 V4 engine, and its V-Tec system still renewed. The block develops the same power as on the VFR is 106 horses at 10,250 rpm. It is thus more powerful at high speeds and better filled at usual speeds than the previous Crossrunner. His going is now monitored and the mouth breaks limited by the HTCS traction control already present on the Crosstourer. Rest assured, this is not a bridle but a security; it can be deactivated and adjustable on two levels. Still on the safety side, the machine is fitted with ABS as standard. Braking changes category, with two 310 mm discs at the front clamped by radial 4-piston calipers (296 mm and 3 pistons previously).
Even if the Crossrunner is deviated from the VFR, you will not find your marks, except in the engine behavior. Here, there is no question of the pilot adopting a sporty position with a road reconciliation: the high handlebars naturally raise the bust.
The equipment also plays with its charm to attract the undecided and improve daily life. The two-part saddle is now adjustable to two heights, the heated grips are supplied as standard and the indicators stop automatically (once the on-board electronics have taken into account the difference in wheel speed). Finally, the Crossrunner adopts LED headlights, a redesigned swingarm and a lightweight rear loop..
