“I would put on sneakers this morning. But Howard told me about a nice way to go for a picnic; maybe it would be better to put on my hiking shoes. And tonight, I have to move with Gerard; where are they? my all-purpose pumps? “
What anguish! In the CB 500 family, rather than asking all these questions, we created version X. Trail declension, uh … rather crossover of the famous Honda roadster, the machine has been thinking for a while to assume more of its look. On one side the red lights, on the other the greenways. Attempted ? Tempting ?

Attempt anyway. That of going to seek for real (if not for good) the places justifying its X. This CB 500 reviews its front tire fitment, turning the previous sessions in 17 inches for a 19 ”front rim. Larger but also narrower with a 110 wide tire, the wheel is intended for trail-oriented handling and capabilities, without being truly off-road. This is not really a change but more a confirmation, the silhouette of this CB 500 being oriented to convey small and multiple escapes, under the alibi of everyday life; or the opposite.

This look precisely, which evolves noticeably with more prominent sides, a face a little reworked, a more compact exhaust, a little something airy and … less engine spoiler. Weird to have kicked out this ersatz protection when you pretend to be an adventurer. Unless the increased suspension travel gives the Honda full confidence. With 150 mm, the fork gains 10 mm of travel; and the new shock absorber goes from 118 to 135 mm.
We have just taken a tour of the chassis modifications. The manufacturer did not want to retouch the steel tube frame or the braking. He continued his investigations elsewhere: on the saddle, for more finesse and better place the feet on the ground; on the casing, to improve protection; on the steering, in order to steer better (+ 3 ° on each side); and a little engine touch-up to season it all.

2020 Honda CB 500 X Its twin-cylinder is impeccable for the A2. It delivers the dose of power in line with the regulations, stuffed into a docile character; under the yoke of omnipresent benevolence and moderate enthusiasm. Enough to do the job while leaving the drunkenness to other productions. Without touching the block but slightly recalibrating its distribution, Honda announces that it has improved power and torque by 4% between 3,000 and 7,000 rpm. Impeccable, this is the speed range that we will use the most. All you have to do is let the 47.6 horses pave the way between the streets and the roads, hoping to find a path.

Given the profile of the clientele, we are surprised that there is still no 12V or USB socket as standard. The changes are for elsewhere, such as redesigned mirrors, the displacement of the airbox to the rear to improve the gas flow, the installation of an assisted slip clutch, smaller LED indicators, a handlebars with a tapered profile. and a new dashboard. Much nicer than the old one, with the gear display embedded in the middle of the tachometer. A shiflight is also present, configurable in increments of 250 trs.

Not fierce, more intrepid, the CB 500 X confirms its position with this evolution. We are still far from a trail but the machine wants to approach it. Above all, there is now more than the dress but also more important technical differences which allow it to mark its difference with the CB 500 F.
