Honda CB 650 F 2015

The realm of streetfighters is a vibrant environment, where attitude matters as much as engine nervousness. With its Hornet, Honda has always held one of the most famous strongholds there. The only criticism that the community made him: an outdated engine, the street clans having raised the level to the bar of 800 cm3. The builder drew like no one expected. A roadster with more displacement, but less radical. This new CB 650 F is not a “ball of nerves” machine; it is the link between a fun CB 500 for all and the effervescent Hornet for excited trigger.

The CB 650, we immediately see that it will be teasing but not mean. A fun machine, limit toy for all, with a deliberate desire of Honda to offer a roadster typified fun playful. Arsouille, he does not sweat it. This is really another chapter that this motorcycle writes, with a silhouette, an engine and a part-cycle that gives flavor to this type of motorcycle: THE roadster, for all, as in the heyday of the 600 Bandit.

Let’s not look for enriched uranium or kryptonite in this new 649cc block. Here, it does not smell of burnt gum or adrenaline under pressure. Completely new, this 4-legged also adopts a different philosophy. Are you fed up with howling it to get watts! The young team of engineers who worked on the CB 650 focused on low and mid-range availability. We do not expect an explosive side at high revs but more consistent muscle in the ranges of daily use.
Neither soft calf nor small bomb, the engine is of modern design, clean, chiadee … Honda, what! 4 cylinders in line, 16 valves, injection of 32 mm, internal dimensions of 67 x 46 mm (same bore as in the Hornet block but longer stroke), important work to reduce internal friction, and enough power to have fun daily. 87 horsepower, which the engine delivers at 11,000 rpm. However, thrill seekers will be hungry for more. 15 nags less than a hornet, it shows. Disappointment in terms of torque, with a peak of 6.5 mkg identical to that of the hornet 600. With additional airspace, we expected a small 7 mkg. However, nothing is yet settled: the maximum torque is obtained at 8,000 rpm on the CB 650, at 10,500 on the Hornet. And we bet that the curve is much rounder than that of the 600.
And while you are looking at this mechanism, leave the technical sheet aside and approach the metal. See: not a wandering wire, not an unsightly hose. It’s lick, neat, clean, well organized … it looks like it’s made for an operating room. To give you hives if a trace of oil is forgotten on it.

With this CB 650 F, it is also the mono-backbone frame that is the trunk. The new Honda roadster is held by a double-spar steel frame, a die-cast aluminum swingarm and a classic 41mm fork. Two 320 mm petal brake discs for the front, with 2 piston axial calipers. The general geometry of the chassis announces less liveliness than the incisive Hornet. It is clear: with its measured power and its progressive chassis more than aggressive, the CB 650 F promises to be a pleasure machine more than a sports machine. It is not he who will sinter with the Z, MT-850 or GSR. This does not prevent this bike from having its visual character, halfway between the old Hornet and the recent CB 500 F (hey, haven’t we already read that above :-). The golden rims would go perfectly on a sports car, the rear part expresses the looks of a CBR 1000 RR, and the manufacturer takes the opportunity to install a new dashboard, not necessarily cheerful but focused on the essentials..

A nice streetfighter? No, he’s not a member of any gang. See it more as an entry-level roadster with a measured desire to play with the rebels. I said “envy”, not “pretend” or “try”. And looking at it over a few years, it simply takes over from the CBF 600 N, with a lot more sex appeal. Intended for everyone but especially for young people, the CB 650 F is also available in A2 license configuration. The range of roadsters at Honda becomes particularly rich but it still lacks a powder keg capable of shaking the Z 800, MT-09, Street Triple and other blood machines.
