With the arrival of the Suzuki GSX-R 1000, the Fireblade (and all the other sports cars for that matter) took a hell of a beating. So, for its new version, the engineers radicalized it a little more to stem the “gex” leadership. Aesthetically, the lines of the 2002 livery are tighter, the smile inducted by the 929 has become particularly aggressive, the titanium pot is enormous but even lighter, and like the R1, the rear light is now diode..
The engine doesn’t just gain cc. It gains a new injection with a faster processor, the pistons are lighter, and the cubic displacement now 954 cm3. With that, the CBR should finally release the power announced by the engineers (the old one never released the original 153 hp planned).
Although this boiler is obviously gained in torque, and even if it is quite full, it is not as impressive or as efficient as that of the GSX-R. It is still very powerful, and surely more controllable than the fiery 4-cylinder Suzuki.
The cycle part has not fallen asleep on its laurels. The already excellent framework is seen modified – reinforced – at the level of the steering column. The shorter tank brings the pilot closer and refocuses the masses. Let’s focus on the new swingarm. A real competition piece, which the CBR shares with the new VTR SP-2. A superb assembly that is longer, more imposing, more rigid and lighter than the previous one. In anticipation of very serious track use, the new rear shock absorber anchor allows the machine to be adjusted without affecting the suspension settings..
Faithful to the “Total control” philosophy of the designer of the CBR 900, the Fireblade is always very powerful without being exclusive. It is better to be experienced but it seems to require less technical baggage than the competition to be exploited. And yet, the performance of this 954 does not bury that of the previous 929. Certainly more lively, it has all the same lost a little stability. The fork is a little less efficient than on the previous generation and the suspensions are sometimes exceeded when the CBR is strongly whipped. OK, the annoying reactions only appear in severe racing use … but the old one allowed to attack without worry.
On a daily basis, the Blade remains more versatile than competing pistards, with in particular a comfort close to the decent, a very complete dashboard with H.I.S.S and a trunk allowing to take more than a pack of cigarettes..
