At Honda, we cannot say that the general public TT offer is flourishing. The NC 700 X? Too much road. The Crossrunner, we don’t even talk about it. The FIUs? Too cross. So, how do you go about having fun on the roads? The CRF 250 L arrives to fill this void and open the way to versatile all-rounders.
So we come back to the basics of trail running: a light, versatile machine, as much at home in the city as on the roads. Forget the multicylinders, large airspace and other pachydermal devices; we take the road for a ride with a mono, and we go from the restaurant to the picnic, passing by to say hello to friends on the beach.
Honda is taking the opportunity to persevere in the deployment of the 2 and a half. After the CBR, it is this trail that is introduced in this range of displacement. It thus faces directly the KLX 250 of Kawa. The mono seems to come from the sportswoman mentioned previously. With super square dimensions (76 x 55 mm), it is powered by a 36 mm injection, has two ACTs, liquid cooling and a 6-speed gearbox. The power developed is within the standards of the category: 23 horses, and a little more than 2 mkg of torque. It remains far from the punch of pure cross machines, but sufficient for playful use. And this avoids going to the revision stage every 50 hours of use.
To hold the CRF 250 L, Honda offers it a new but classic double steel beam frame with split cradle. It benefits from a 43mm Showa inverted fork and a Pro-link monoshock. The suspensions work on large deflections of 250 and 240 mm. Its wheelbase of 1445 mm and a high caster clearly favor stability. And to make it spin in urban terrain, its steering angle will greatly facilitate things. The steering swivels 45 ° on either side; for comparison, that of a Kawasaki 650 Versys is 35 °.
The 21 ” front wheel is fitted with a 256 mm brake disc, the 18 ” rear wheel has a 220 mm disc. The announced weight is faithful to those of the category: 144 kilos. It’s 70 kg less than a Transalp, and 40 more than a cross country CRF.
Honda presents this trail as a distant descendant of the XL 250 S. Fortunately, the CRF has much more character. The finesse and stylistic effects in a triangle make it frankly attractive. The instrumentation, digital and minimalist, displays the speed, a clock, 2 trips, and a fuel gauge. No need to worry about the autonomy: the tank contains only 7.7 liters, but the consumption is announced for 3.1 to 100. The rear hull incorporates a tool kit. The CFR 250 L has an attractive price to appeal to a large audience: 4299 euros, that’s almost the price of a CBR 250. It may not alone revive the craze for average trails. displacement as before, but the initiative is to be welcomed.
