Thanks to traction control and little grip, the starters did not have to struggle with the rising front wheel.

Cool appearance. The FTR 1200 can do that without a doubt.

Sprint field report and video report
You can read here how MOTORRAD volunteer Fabian experienced his first 1/8 mile sprint at Glemseck 101 and you can see the short report from the event in the video.
Fabian Dresler
04.09.2019
Starting at Glemseck 101 means a few seconds of racing action in which everything has to be right. So also with Indian Brand sprint this year. The Indian boys brought four FTR 1200s with them, which four motorcycle journalists race against. In the knockout mode there are two preliminary runs followed by a final and the run for 3rd place. For MOTORRAD, volunteer Fabian Dresler is at the start – for the first time in a sprint and for the first time on an FTR.
No grip, but a lot of performance
During the first short rollout next to the Indian truck, it is immediately noticeable that the FTR series tire may be suitable for many purposes, but not for brute acceleration and the transmission of 123 Newton meters of torque over the first few meters. If the clutch clicks forward a little too briskly, the power is not converted into propulsion, but into squeaking.
This must be avoided, because the traction control must remain switched on for safety reasons. And it resolutely cuts the propulsion as soon as it detects wheelspin on the rear wheel. By the time she releases the gas again, the opponent is long gone – if he doesn’t suffer the same mishap.
Tips from the experts and a good plan
“Under these conditions you could rather start in second gear and save yourself a gear change”, Fabian thinks about before the race. Could work, but doesn’t have to. Fortunately, FUEL boss Rolf Henniges, who has a lot of Glemseck experience, is on hand to advise. Last year he drove the Indian flat track sprint competition machine – a real beast. “Try it out in the test run, if you notice that you are stuck, take first place in the race,” he says to Fabian. “All right,” is the answer.

focus.
When the flag clears the start of the test run, the acceleration fits. Important: Maintain speed with the clutch and shift at the right moment. Only once, then the goal has already been reached. “If you notice it works, turn off the gas and let it pass,” Rolf had also said. So for the test once to the limiter and then roll out. Dress rehearsal succeeded! A bad sign?

After the training, it goes back to the start immediately. It works really well. On the other lane, however, you can hear tires screeching – bad for the opponent. If the material is identical, he can no longer make up for the resulting residue. Final for the MOTORRAD volunteer.
Microsleep in the finale
Back on the line without a break – the still warm tires could now be an advantage. The flag goes down, the enemy starts. Half a second goes by. Then Fabian also starts. Oversleep? Yes.
As in the run before, the distance to the opponent remains the same, only to the detriment of our protege. The words that come afterwards are not entirely suitable for minors. But there are no excuses for this intermittent nap. Still: 2nd place is a good debut. And as the MOTORRAD editorial manager Iris Fischer said afterwards: “You have to give yourself some room for improvement.”
Conclusion
If you leave later, you will arrive later. A rule that doesn’t always apply, but almost always in a sprint.
