Indian 1720 CHIEF VINTAGE 2011

Indian is one of the most iconic brands in motorcycle history, one of the oldest, and one of the most expensive today. More than 50 years after its extinction, the brand is back with a typically American range: from large custom to several sauces, with a keen sense of sharing.. Engine and chassis are identical on all models. So what can the imposing Chief Vintage use as an argument to justify its hefty price tag, stealing 10,000 euros more than the more affordable Chief, the Classic? A name authorizes a check for 40,000 roros ?

High-end, luxury, hand-built motorcycles, numbered and sweating America, this is how Indian wants to charm the barge. And it’s true that it looks good, especially since most of the design responds to the appeal: the line, and the famous mudguards covering most of the wheels. The engine alone really deserves our attention. A superb block all in fins, steel and depth. A real metal sculpture, like two biceps frozen in the fruit of the forge. Simply superb. Too bad his performances are not of the same pitch. The 1720cc may be flexible with a distinctive behavior, it does not have the rocky character of a Harley Twin Cam, nor the breath of a Freedom from Victory..
The Chief Vintage tries to catch up on the finish. The painting is flawless, playing without hiding on its quality. Attention to detail has lingered over the entire machine, but a few wrong notes spoil the picture; while one is entitled to expect flawlessness on a machine costing twice the price of an Aprilia RSV4 factory.
Like 99% of customs, the Chief Vintage has a chassis made of a tubular steel cradle. Conventional to the end of the wire wheels, the chassis features a 41mm fork, a single shock absorber and 3 x 292mm discs. This is what it takes to ride, not to spin. Because if The Indian can boast of being the queen of the prom, she’ll be picking it up in the gym. With a third of a ton in its paws and pachyderm dynamism, this cruiser is all about parading. So don’t rush the machine.

So, is this top of the line Spingfield really worth the price? Well, the value for money is far from established. On the other hand, we have to admit that 1700 Chief Vintage is really a beautiful machine. It’s a real treat to watch, it smells like the States of yesteryear, and the feeling of owning an exceptional frontier machine sets the Indian apart in the production.
