To afford an Indian is to become attached to a chapter in motorcycle history, pegged to a legend born somewhere between civilization and Harley-Davidson. Formerly the leader of world production, later disappeared in the torments of modernity, now in rebirth, the American brand is eager to find the road again with its Chief models. Among the more affordable, the Classic would play it almost soft if we disregarded its opulence.
The Chief Classic is huge. It’s a custom that stretches the length of the road. Long, heavy, muscular, it seems to push the asphalt with its presence. Certainly, we are dealing with a large part. But the most spectacular is the Powerplus engine block. A twin that is both superb and impressive, which we never tire of detailing. The gaze jumps from wing to wing following the rocker rods. With its oval shapes, its chrome, its majesty, this small mechanical cathedral makes any liquid twin-cylinder seem tasteless, regardless of its pedigree. We forget its ridiculous output (approx 40 hp / liter); because power here is of little interest anyway. Only muscle relaxation matters.
This 1720 Classic goes straight to the point: low riding without artifice or luggage. Announced at the border of 30,000 euros, the Indian Chief Classic would seem to be at the top of the range with such a price … And no: it is the opposite. Yet despite its legendary name, flattering appearance and almost fascinating engine, this bike is downright expensive for what it is. Although the finish is good, efforts need to be made on this side, and the handmade label still does not allow the wallet to suffocate at this point..
